Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 123

She felt awful. Turning her face away, she slapped his hand off. If you want to talk, talk properly. Keep your hands to yourself. I’ve told you beforeI find it disgusting.

Her words sparked a flash of anger in Theodore’s eyes, but instead of lashing out, his tone softened. Emma, I know you love me. The vows madeI meant every word. You’ll always be my wife.

Something felt off. Emma glanced over at him, suspicious. So? What’s your point?

He hesitated, then finally spoke. Soplease, stop targeting Cici. About what happened this time-

Emma let out a cold laugh. There it was. She’d been waiting for this.

For Cecília, he’d put up with anything. Theodore, always so proud and untouchableeven after being called filthy by her, he could still swallow

it down.

At that moment, Emma’s phone rang from inside her purse. She answered to find it was the police station, asking her to come down.

Alright, I’ll be right there, she said, hanging up.

I’ll drive you,Theodore offered immediately.

Emma considered it and shrugged. Why not.

Theodore seemed like he wanted to say more.

She chose to ignore his hesitation.

But he wouldn’t let it go. She knew he’d speak up eventually.

Sure enough, his hand rested on the steering wheel as he called her name again, quietly. Emma.

Yes?

Promise me you won’t make things difficult for her.

Chapter 123

Emma laughed. She tried to kill your wife, Theodore. I’m not the one making things difficult for her.

Oh, right. That wouldn’t faze him. In his mind, his sweet, naïve little darling could never hurt anyone. It was all just a misunderstanding.

She–

He barely got the word out before she cut him off, already exhausted. Forget it. Don’t say another word.

Emma!

Oh, come on. Isn’t this exactly what you’re good at? With all your money and connections, CEO Whitman, aren’t you ready to do whatever it takes for her?

Fine!Theodore’s face darkened as he started the car and drove off.

Suddenly, a thought occurred to Emma. She wanted to ask Theodore: Back in the rehab room, did he really stop her from pushing through the pain for her own sakeor was it just an excuse to get her out and talk her into letting Cecilia off the hook?

She didn’t ask.

The answer was obvious.

Of course it was the latter. Look at himhad he asked even once if she

was still in pain?

That answer was confirmed the moment they arrived at the police

station.

He got out of the car and strode inside without a backward glance, never even checking if she could walk on her own or if her leg still hurt.

Emma’s phone rang again just as she stepped out. Leaning against the car, she took the call. By the time she finished, Theodore was already halfway across the parking lot. He glanced back at her for a split second, but didn’t slow down or waitjust walked right in.

Emma hadn’t expected Theodore to ever take her side. When her call ended, she gathered herself and limped slowly into the station.

What she didn’t expect was to find Cecilia there as wellalong with Jared and Hanley. Theodore was talking to a police officer.

Cecilia sat crying on a bench, while Jared and Hanley flanked her like bodyguards, staring daggers at Emma as if she were some mortal enemy. Did they really hate her that much?

When Theodore finished with the officer, Jared immediately stood, giving up his seat beside Cecilia for Theodore. Theodore accepted, sitting down as if it were only natural.

Emma watched the whole scene unfold, feeling as though she’d stepped into a circus of human absurdity.

But the real show was just beginning.

Testimonies from Theodore’s company had somehow changed.

The receptionist and Assistant Laurenttheir stories at the station were nothing like what they’d claimed back at the office.

The receptionista new hireclaimed she didn’t recognize Mrs. Whitman. She said girls were always showing up for Mr. Whitman, so she assumed Emma was just another one of them. As for Emma’s desperate call for help, the receptionist shrugged it off, saying plenty of girls had played that trick before, all to get Mr. Whitman’s attention. She insisted she was only protecting the company’s interests, and safeguarding Mr. and Mrs. Whitman’s relationship. She genuinely believed she’d done nothing

wrong.

As for Assistant Laurent, she admitted she knew about Emma’s mango allergy but served her mango juice anyway, pretending it was passionfruit lemonade. Security footage showed she’d locked the door herselfshe confessed to that, too. Her reason? Jealousy. She’d been Theodore’s assistant for years, secretly in love with him all along. How could a cripple like Emma, she said, land Theodore and bask in the glory

of being Mrs. Whitman? She couldn’t accept itso she’d decided to mess

with Emma, just a little.

Then there was the matter of the cut wires in the conference room. An electrician confessed it was his doinghe’d meant to fix them, but before he could finish repairs, the fire broke out.

Emma glanced at Theodore. So this was what he meant by doing everything in his power. He’d used his wealth and influence to clear Cecilia’s name, finding scapegoats willing to take the blame for every single crime. His sweet, innocent little flower came out squeaky clean, untouched by it all.

Jared and Hanley stared at Emma with smug, almost mocking eyes, as if to say, What are you going to do about it?

Cecilia, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, sniffled out a pitiful plea. “EmmaI know you’re insecure, that you never trust Theo, especially when it comes to me, so you’re convinced I tried to hurt you. But looksee for yourself. I had nothing to do with it. There’s nothing between me and Theowe’re completely innocent
