Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 154

Chapter 154

Fallon had injured both her foot and her arm in the fall. Her ankle was so badly twisted that it had swollen up to the size of a tennis ball, making it impossible for her to walk. Her arm, having taken the brunt of the impact, was fracturedno wonder she could barely hold onto her phone.

Emma had suffered a head injury and needed stitches. Other than that, she seemed alright, though she felt dizzyprobably from the blood loss, though the alcohol she’d consumed earlier might have played a part as

well.

Emma was anxious, worried about whether she’d be allowed to take a longhaul flight after having stitches. The doctor didn’t give her a definite answer. He only asked when her flight was scheduled, did a quick calculation, and, seeing that it was still more than ten days away and that her wound wasn’t too large, told her it would depend on how well she healed by then.

Emma and Fallon were placed in separate hospital rooms. With no one around to look after them, a nurse asked about their family. Without a moment’s hesitation, Emma asked her to arrange for two caregivers.

Despite her dizziness, Emma managed to organize everything, making sure every detail was handled. Only after she’d finished did she finally succumb to exhaustion and drift into a heavy, dreamless sleep.

She slept deeply and for a long time. Nurses and doctors came and went in her room, their footsteps and voices echoing softly, but unlike usual, none of it disturbed her. She was completely out.

Next door, Fallon was worried sick, constantly asking the caregiver to check on Emma. Every time, the report was the same: She’s still sleeping.”

Fallon grew more anxious. The doctors reassured her that Emma was fine, nothing to worry about, but Fallon couldn’t help but wonderhow could someone sleep so much if nothing was wrong? But what bothered her even more was that, despite both of them being in the hospital, her

husband hadn’t called once. Even if Emma was sleeping too deeply to answer, Fallon’s own phone had stayed silent. She’d even tried calling him herself the night beforeif she was calling, it must have been importantyet he hadn’t called back.

Theodore did finally call, but not until the following afternoon.

Emma had just woken up, having skipped both breakfast and lunch. She was still groggy when she heard her phone buzzing in the drawer, rousing her from sleep.

She asked the caregiver to hand her the phone. The caller ID read: Theodore.

She hesitated, then answered. Theodore’s voice came through, Emma?

Yes.

He hesitated too. I have a gettogether this afternoon. I’ll be home late.

That was odd. Theodore had never bothered to call when he’d be late before. Why today? But Emma was still halfasleep, too tired to care. She replied with a simple, Alright.

Theodore didn’t hang up. He seemed unsure, as if there was something

else he wanted to say.

Emma, sensing the awkward pause, was about to end the call, Well, then-

Emma?he called her name again.

She waited for him to speak.

last night I had too much to drink. I stayed at a hotel.”

Emma’s mind finally cleared. So he hadn’t come home last night, and he probably wasn’t coming home tonight either. That must be why he’d decided to callafter all, it wasn’t like he was away on business, and staying away two nights in a row was unusual for him.

Oh.She kept her tone neutral, too drained to engage, I’m going to go.

I’m hungry.

She really was after sleeping nearly a full day and night, her stomach was growling, and the alcohol from the night before had left her feeling

queasy.

Alright,” Theodore replied gently. I’ll bring something nice for you to eat when I get home. Is there anything you want?

Whatever, she said, thinking, Home? By the time you get back, I’ll be long gone from here. What’s the point of bringing anything?
