Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 419

He had been waiting for her.

He knew her flight information because they were still listed as family members on some travel apps. They had finalized the divorce at City Hall, but he could never bring himself to sever those digital ties. As long as they remained, it felt like there was still a thread connecting them.

He walked towards her, trying to force a smile, but her stern expression made it impossible.

"I… came to see Grandma off…" he stammered.

His grandmother just shook her head sadly. Everyone knew why he was really here.

"Grandma…" he said, unable to meet Emma's eyes. "Please, take care of yourself over there."

He had only spoken to his grandmother because he was afraid to speak to Emma, but as he did, a wave of memories washed over him, and his eyes filled with genuine tears.

"Grandma…" he choked out, "thank you for everything you did for me. I'm so sorry I failed you, that I hurt you and Emma… I'll never have the chance to make it up to you now…"

Emma stepped in front of her grandmother, shielding her. "Theodore, she is *my* grandmother. I will take care of her. This has nothing to do with you."

Her words were like a slap in the face. She was right. They were divorced. It had nothing to do with him. Her one condition had been that after the divorce, they would be strangers.

But he couldn't do it.

He couldn't just walk away. Even if she despised him, he had to be here.
