Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 70

Chapter 70

Cecilia’s expression shifted instantly as she looked at Theodore, as if to say, Why is Mrs. Grant being so polite to Emma?

Theodore was just as baffled. He had no idea his own wife was acquainted with anyone from the Grant family. What was going on?

Ms. Remington shot Mr. Grant a reproachful glance. Emma, the girl who saved your son’s lifeyou’ve forgotten already?

Recognition dawned on Mr. Grant’s face. Ah, now I remember! The young lady from the Dance Academy? Miss Bennett, forgive my oversight.

Cecilia and Theodore were even more confused. How had Emma become the Grant family heir’s lifesaver?

Just then, the woman who had entered with Ms. Remington stepped forward and extended a friendly hand to Emma. Hello, Emma. I’m Daniel. It’s a pleasure to meet

you.”

Emma looked at Daniel, recalling what Cecilia had said about the Grant family’s eldest child, and she couldn’t help but smile.

Cecilia’s face flushed red, then blanched, then turned ashen gray.

And Sebastian wasn’t about to let her off the hook. Grinning, he teased, Sis, you really should come out more often. Otherwise, the whole town will keep thinking our family’s heir, Daniel, is some sort of sixarmed, threeheaded legend.

Daniel laughed. “Am I really that mythical? When did I become the eldest? Isn’t that you?

Oh, I wouldn’t dare,Sebastian replied, turning to Emma with a smile. Don’t tease me, sis, I’m just the little brother. Honestly, even our dog Nova outranks me at home.

Nova is our family dog,” Ms. Remington explained to Emma.

Emma was laughing so hard her eyes sparkled with mirth.

This family was so genuine, so warm.

She barely knew them, and yet she could feel their kindness was absolutely sincere.

Only Cecilia felt like she was about to explode. The fact that Daniel wasn’t even the family heir had already shattered her selfimage. She remembered how she’d just

to be the Grant family’s own son?

Watching Emma laugh and chat so easily with the Grants, Cecilia couldn’t stand it any longer. She blurted out to Sebastian, Aren’t you a dancer? I thought your last name was Remington?

Sebastian’s smile was sly. I take my mother’s name. Is there a problem with that?

What?!

Cecilia staggered back and collapsed into a chair.

Sebastian was actually the true Grant family heir. That meant all those things she’d said to mock him had insulted the whole Grant family. And what about Theodore’s business dealings with them?

Cecilia’s outburst caught Ms. Remington’s attention.

Still holding Emma’s hand, Ms. Remington pointed at Cecilia. “You! You’re the one who tripped Emma just now, aren’t you? Who are you, and what are you playing at, causing trouble at my party?

It was like a thunderclap on a clear dayCecilia was struck dumb with panic, unable to think, her first instinct to deny everything. “II didn’t! Mrs. Grant, don’t listen to gossipI didn’t do anything!

She turned on Emma, her voice sharp. Emma, I know you don’t like me, but you can’t slander me like this! Mrs. Grant, she’s making things upI never tripped her! Ask her if there’s any proof! You can’t just take her word for it!

Proof?Ms. Remington’s tone was icy. My eyes are proof enough. I saw it with my own eyes. Or are you accusing me of lying too?

Cecilia’s face went deathly pale. She collapsed inward, unable to utter another word.

But so what?

Emma knew that, in the end, Theodore would still stand by Cecilia. Even if Cecilia managed to ruin his business, she would always be his darling.
