Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 94

Chapter 94

She barely poked her head out before shrinking back again.

I’ll go check it out,Theodore said to her, standing up and heading outside.

Cecilia waited outside, clutching a bouquet of flowers in her arms. She looked hesitant, almost timid. Theo, how’s Emma doing? I wanted to visit her, but I was worried she wouldn’t want to see me, that she might not like me.

She’ll be fine, just needs some rest,” Theodore replied. He knew Emma didn’t care for Cecilia, so he added, I appreciate the thought on her behalf, but she’s not in the best mood right now. You should head back.

OkayCecilia hadn’t really come to see Emma anyway. Just seeing Theodore was enough for her. She bit her lip, her eyes starting to brim with tears. I’m so sorry, Theo. This is all my fault. As your assistant, I should’ve paid more attention and now Emma’s had to suffer for it. If anything had happened to herI could never make it right, not even if I gave my own life.

She started to cry before she could finish her sentence.

Inside the observation room, Emma could hear everythingevery word clear as day. So, Cecilia was working as Theodore’s assistant now? Did that mean she traveled with him for work, always together, side by side?

Well, if Cecilia was his assistant, then today’s events were starting to make a lot more

sense.

Outside, Theodore tried to comfort Cecilia. We still don’t know exactly how all this happened. Once Emma’s settled, I’ll look into it properly.

Cecilia sniffed, her voice shaking. Jared and Hanley are already investigating. Apparently, the wiring in the conference room caught fireno one knows how it got so old, I should’ve checked it, I’m sorry

If it was an electrical fire, it’s not your fault,Theodore said gently. You’re not an electrician. Don’t blame yourself. Go on home, wait for the fire marshal’s report. I’ll be here a while longer.

Alrightthen could you give these flowers to Emma for me? They’re from all of usme, Jared, and the others. We’re all friends, after all. Even if Emma doesn’t like us, we still want her to get well soon.

Emma: What? Is this some kind of performance?

Chapter 94

And seriously, has Theodore lost his mind? Cecilia’s a science majordoes he really think she doesn’t understand how an electrical fire works? Emma sure did.

She’d noticed the wiring problem as soon as she was locked in the conference room.

She’d even seen the clean cut in the cablethe insulation had been sliced open on

purpose.

She had tried to call for help.

The first time, when her calls for help were refused because she was locked inside, she noticed the wiring issue and dialed again, including Theodore’s number. If even one person had picked up, the fire never would have happened.

In that moment, she’d felt a deep, bitter hatred.

Had she ever gotten in any of their way?

Hadn’t she already told Theodore she wanted a divorce?

She’d made up her mind to leavejust two more weeks, and she’d sever all ties, say goodbye to her past, and hand their perfect, impenetrable world back to them. So why couldn’t they just let her go? Why go so far as to set a trap and try to burn her

alive?

Fine. She could play their game.

She wasn’t going to let certain people walk away unscathed.

She knew there was a smoke detector in the conference roomany sign of smoke

would set off the alarm.

She was allergic to mango, so the scent hit her instantly. The moment the cup was set in front of her, she knew it wasn’t just passionfruit lemonade; there was definitely mango juice mixed in.

If they were setting a trap for her, she’d step right into it.

She was the first to call the fire departmentshe genuinely needed help, and she really had seen the wires catch fire.
