Chapter 401

:

That evening. Tuff returned home with news about the car accident.

It wasn’t Joyce after all!Kayla thought, surprised.

I always thought it was herKayla frowned, her mind tangled with complicated feelings.

The garbage truck driver confessed right away during the first interrogation. Someone had paid him to crash into any car Maggie was riding in. It didn’t matter which vehicle she took. He was supposed to hit it.

There were two of them, splitting up to cover more ground. One tailgated the Prescott family’s car, and when he realized Maggie wasn’t inside, he forced the car up onto the curb.

After that, the garbage truck targeted the Lambert family’s car.

The plan was meticulous and wellorganized. If a taxi with a pregnant passenger hadn’t happened to pass by right then, and the garbage truck driver hadn’t been able to bring himself to hurt an innocent, hitting the brakes early, the Lambert family’s car would’ve been totaled.

Whoever planned this really knew what they were doing! Did the driver say who was pulling the strings?Kayla’s heart clenched as she remembered the bullet wound medicine in Raymond’s bag.

Tuff said, He was willing to talk, but he never actually saw the guy in person. All he knows is that it was a man wearing a black mask when they made the exchange.

No security footage? What about bank records?Kayla asked.

Nothing. They used cash,Tuff replied.

That makes it really hard to track down. Honey, what does your family actually do overseas?Kayla asked.

Real estate and the import/export of commodities. It’s all legitimate business, and the competition isn’t cutthroat,Tuff said, leaning against the headboard, still lost in thought about the accident.

When he first got the report from Maverick, he couldn’t help but wonder if Maverick had really done a thorough job. So he decided to talk to the garbage truck driver himself.

The Prescott family was wellknown in Lunova. Almost no one would dare to cross them. They wondered who actually had the guts to go after the Prescotts.

Honey, there’s something you should know,” Kayla said, handing him her phone.

Tuff glanced at the photo and instantly recognized the medicine box. Is that for gunshot wounds?

Yeah, it fell out of your dad’s bag,” Kayla replied.

Tuff shot upright, his face tense. Wait, my dad got shot? No way, I have to go ask him.”

Kayla didn’t stop him.

If Dad really got shot, then someone seriously dangerous is messing with us behind the scenes, Kayla thought, a chill running down her spine.

As the night deepened, snowflakes drifted down, and the courtyard’s oldfashioned lanterns glowed softly in the haze, painting a picture straight out of a dream.

Kayla stood at the window, thinking for ages before finally calling Landon. Are you coming to Lunova

tomorrow?

Yeah, we’re all packed and ready to go,” Landon replied.

Maybe you shouldn’t come after all. I’m swamped these next few days,Kayla said.

Landon narrowed his eyes. Busy? What could you possibly be so busy with during the holidays?

There are a lot of guests coming and going at the Prescott family, and I have to entertain them all. Maybe you guys should wait a bit before coming over,Kayla said.

After a brief pause, Landon said, Alright.”

Kayla let out a huge sigh of relief, then put on a cheerful front and chatted with everyone at home.

But she couldn’t possibly hide it from the perceptive Landon.

After hanging up, Landon said to Amelia, Something’s up with Kayla.’

Mrs. Prescott’s car accident was no accident? Then we need to get to Lunova right now,Amelia exclaimed, shooting up from bed the moment she heard.

After all the chaos we’ve weathered with them, I can’t help but suspect there’s some old feud or vendetta behind this,’ Amelia thought, her instincts kicking in.

Landon couldn’t help but laugh as he gently pulled Amelia back down onto the bed. Come on, it’s the middle of the night. Why are you in such a hurry?

We can’t let Kayla fight this battle alone. She needs us!Amelia blurted out, clearly anxious.

Amelia had once been left to fight all by herself.

The fear of being dragged back by Zachary and the Edwards family, of getting hurt all over again, was still fresh in her memory.

She wasn’t about to let Kayla go through that nightmare too.

Tuff’s there, isn’t he? If he can’t even protect his own wife, what kind of man would he be?Landon chuckled.

Amelia let out a breath and nodded. Yeah, you’re right. Tuff’s definitely got this

Landon frowned and shot back, Am I not strong too?

Amelia rolled her eyes. Really? He’s getting jealous at a time like this?

I’m guessing Kayla doesn’t want us getting caught up in this mess again. Whatever’s happening, it’s no small matter,Landon said, his voice low and serious.

Amelia’s nerves, which had just started to settle, snapped right back to attention. Then why aren’t you freaking out?she demanded.

We’ll stick to the plan and catch the earliest flight to Lunova tomorrow. But let’s keep it under wraps from the Prescott family for now,Landon said.

So, we’re going to lend a hand behind the scenes?Amelia asked.

Yeah, let’s scope things out first. Give Daniel a headsup. We’ll crash at his place for now,” Landon replied.

Got it,Amelia replied.

She immediately shot Daniel a message, saying they were coming home to celebrate the holidays.

Daniel was thrilled and quickly started making arrangements for their arrival, including a family dinner.

But Amelia, worried that things might get too serious and Kayla would find out, suggested they keep it low- key and just have a cosy gathering at home.

When Tuff came back into the room, he looked troubled.

Kayla’s heart sank. What did your dad say?

He got shot while he was in Dreicean. We suspect the shooter might be working with the guy who crashed into my mom’s car,Tuff said, his voice tight.

Kayla fell silent.

People who keep guns aren’t exactly saints. Just who did the Prescott family piss off this time?Kayla thought, anxiety gnawing at her.

Honey, don’t worry. I’ll protect you and everyone else,Tuff said, squeezing her hand tightly.

Kayla looked down at his hand.

He was on edge, anxious.

It was an awful feeling, knowing the enemy was lurking in the shadows while they were exposed out in the

open.

But Kayla was used to it,

Suddenly, she remembered those days back in spy training, dressing up in disguise and tagging along with her adoptive parents to all sorts of banquets and social gatherings.

She paused, a little dazed, and rubbed her forehead.

Honey, what’s wrong?Tuff asked, his voice full of concern.
