Chapter 189
Seeing Amanda, Hazel quickly grabbed Jessica and put on her most exaggerated, fawning tone.
“Oh wow, you’re Miss Cooper, right? You’re seriously gorgeous! The moment you walked in, everyone was looking at you!”
“Amanda!” Jessica chimed in affectionately, trying to slip her arm around Amanda’s.
But as Jessica got close, Amanda’s perfectly shaped brows knitted together ever so slightly.
She expertly stepped away on her heels, dodging Jessica’s attempt to cozy up.
Jessica froze for a second.
Hazel quickly jumped in with a laugh, trying to ease the awkwardness. “Silly girl, Amanda looks so stunning tonight. If you even brush up against her, that would be a crime!”
Then, she turned to Amanda with a fawning smile. “Miss Cooper, thank you so much for inviting us…”
But before she could finish, Amanda cut her off.
“Sorry, you’re blocking our way in,” Amanda said, her tone polite but distant.
When Amanda spotted the whole Fairbank family, she was so irritated she almost left nail marks on her palm.
‘These pathetic small fry… What an embarrassment! Why are they still loitering at the entrance like clueless bystanders? And they even have the nerve to greet me right in front of the Cooper family?‘ Amanda sneered in her mind.
She absolutely didn’t want any of the big shots here to find out she even knew a bunch of upstarts like this.
‘What if my family starts getting suspicious?‘ Amanda thought, uneasy.
Amanda quickly cut in before they could say anything and turned to her family. “Grandpa, Mom, Dad, this is a jewelry designer I’ve been working with recently. Her designs are full of character, so I’ve met with her a few
times.”
Claiming she didn’t know them would have been way too suspicious.
Her family was smart enough to see right through that.
This was the most reasonable explanation she could give.
After all, she only reached out to the designer because her work was impressive and Amanda wanted to recruit her for her own jewelry company–only later did she realize it was Jessica herself.
She really couldn’t stand the thought of missing out on such a talented designer.
‘So what’s wrong with that, anyway?‘ Amanda mused to herself with a shrug.
Even if Rolf ordered someone to look into it, this would still be Amanda’s answer.
No matter how much Rolf tried to dig, her story would stay the same.
Amanda kept her expression calm as she took Pansy’s hand. In a soft, sweet voice, she said, “Mom, let’s hurry inside. Sophie was obsessed with her new dress back at the Browns. She’s probably been itching to show it off to us all night.”
The Cooper family nodded, not sparing the Fairbanks another glance as they walked straight into the manor.
The Fairbank family tried to rush forward and say something, but the Cooper family’s bodyguards stepped right in and blocked their way.
With nothing else they could do, the Fairbanks could only stand there, watching helplessly as the Cooper family, surrounded by admirers, strode into the manor.
The other guests glanced at the Fairbanks with looks that said it all–as if they were watching nothing but a group of clowns.
Melvin’s sycophantic smile froze, his face turning sour in an instant.
Feeling the mocking glances all around, he clenched his fists and whipped his head toward Jessica. “What’s going on here? That attitude from Miss Cooper–not a trace of friendship! Be real with me, Jessica, are you pulling one over on me?”
Melvin was staring at her, eyes practically burning with suspicion.
Jessica had been riding high on her family’s praise, feeling like she was on top of the world.
But barely a moment had passed before Melvin was tearing into her, his anger flaring up out of nowhere.
Jessica’s eyes brimmed with tears as she stammered, feeling so wronged. “Dad, how could I possibly lie to you about something like this? If Amanda and I weren’t actually close, why would she invite us to the Browns‘ event?”
As she spoke, she rifled through her bag and pulled out the gold–embossed invitation. “Amanda handed this to me herself, and she specifically said I could bring the whole family–that we could all come to Sophie’s coming–of–age celebration.”
The gold–embossed invitation shimmered in the golden sunlight, looking every bit as luxurious as one would
expect.
Seriously, unless Amanda and Jessica were real friends, Amanda wouldn’t have shown up at Sophie’s coming- of–age party and personally brought Jessica with her.
This was an official, genuine invitation–VIP access, not some cheap knockoff,
Melvin’s expression softened a little.
Hazel gave Melvin a firm nudge on the shoulder. “Come on, Melvin, what are you even saying? Do you really think our daughter would lie to us about something this big? Look, we’re literally at the Brown manor’s gates!
Chapter 1907
And you’re still doubting her?
“What’s with all the fuss? If it wasn’t for Jessica, none of us would’ve even set foot here. Honestly, we probably just got too excited and kinda crossed the line with Mr. Cooper and his crowd. They’re the richest people in Orlathis City–like they’ve got time to stand around and chat with folks like us.
“Plus, didn’t you hear Miss Cooper say Sophie was waiting for her? Of course she’s got to hurry in and see her,”
Hazel insisted.
Jessica bobbed her head quickly. “Yeah, that’s gotta be it!”
Hazel pursed her lips, pulling Jessica along with a hint of annoyance. “Jessica, listen to me! When we get inside, make sure you really show them what you’ve got. If you actually manage to land Mr. Brown…”
She gave a greedy, cold sneer. “Then even the Cooper family will have to suck up to us–all for the Browns‘ sake!”
