Emilia swallowed the ache in her heart.
So much had happened over these past seven years.
She had learned how to hold on—and how to let go.
They'd once truly loved each other. She didn't regret the choices she'd made back then, but now that love was gone, she had nothing left to give him—not her time, not her body, not her heart.
Without another word, Emilia turned and started toward the house.
But Tyler caught her hand.
"Emilia." He called her name again, his grip tightening.
"I told you, no one can take your place," Tyler insisted. "Vivienne only has six months left. After that, things can go back to how they were. We'll be all right again."
"There's no need for all this drama. Just wait six more months, and everything will return to normal."
His voice drifted to her from behind.
Emilia almost laughed.
Hadn't she made herself clear enough? And yet he still thought she was just throwing a tantrum?
Why would she be making a scene—for him? For the title of Mrs. Erickson?
She had never been Mrs. Erickson. She was Emilia Dennis. Just Emilia.
She'd stayed by his side once, but only because she loved him.
Now, she was choosing herself—for the same reason.
She'd loved Tyler once. Now, she was learning to love herself.
She'd given him chances—so many chances. But every time she asked, she got another answer that broke her heart.
She'd been hurt too much in this life. She was done.
The boy who once stood in front of her, shielding her from harm with nothing but a broken stick—maybe he'd died that stormy night long ago.
All that was left now was this Tyler, whose heart belonged to Vivienne.
She wanted nothing more to do with this stranger.
"Let go!" she demanded.
Their argument grew louder and more heated.
Until, finally, an aged voice cut through the chaos.
"That's enough!"
Parker, who'd been waiting for them inside, was now being wheeled out onto the porch, his face dark with anger.
"Tyler, what do you think you're doing?" he barked.
Tyler's lips pressed into a thin line, his icy gaze locked on Emilia.
"Tyler!" Parker snapped again, more forcefully.
Only then did Tyler look away, lowering his eyes.
"Grandpa," he muttered, but even now he wouldn't let go of Emilia's hand.
Parker shot Tyler a furious glare.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Erickson hurried over to Emilia, took her hand gently, and said with concern, "Oh, sweetheart, you've lost so much weight."
