Emilia’s gaze lingered on the cup of tea in Theodore Glenn’s hand.
Steam curled upward, blurring her view as she looked at him through the drifting haze.
“Why?” she asked quietly.
Theodore didn’t seem offended by her hesitation to accept the tea. Instead, he set the cup in front of her, then calmly poured one for himself.
“I admire you,” he said, meeting her eyes. “And I like you.”
But those words didn’t move Emilia.
She’d just clawed her way out of a failed marriage. She wasn’t about to tumble into another relationship just because someone said they “liked” her.
“I don’t understand,” Emilia said, holding his gaze. “You could have any woman you want. I’m not that special.”
“No,” Theodore replied, his voice unwavering. “You are.”
Emilia had no idea how to respond.
The whole thing felt strange.
“I’m sorry. I’m just not ready to think about this.” At last, she found her words.
Her eyes drifted to the untouched tea on the table.
Who proposes marriage like this, anyway? Just sitting there with a cup of tea.
She was barely divorced. She needed room to breathe.
Marriage—whether it happened, with whom, or if it ever did—was a question for another day.
She had Bella to think about.
She couldn’t only consider her own feelings.
And there was so much to do—like preparing for the finals of Voice of the Divine.
And taking this divorce agreement to a lawyer, figuring out how to reclaim her share of the Dennis family’s old estate.
Theodore watched her, his expression unchanged—still gentle, still composed. It was as if being in his presence eased the tension in the room.
