Tyler visited Absolon Foster again—Emilia’s ex-stepfather.
They sat facing each other on opposite sides of the thick glass, their eyes locking until, at last, Absolon picked up the phone receiver first.
Tyler lowered his gaze, then reached for his own receiver.
“So, why are you here again?” Absolon’s voice crackled through the line. “Well? Did you get that divorce? Or was it her who refused?”
Tyler’s expression remained calm as ever. “It’s done,” he replied.
“But…”
A shadow clouded Tyler’s eyes.
“She wanted to leave from the very beginning.”
That seemed to amuse Absolon. He leaned forward, lips curling in a mean-spirited smile.
“So, you thought it was your choice to end things—but really, she was the one who didn’t want you.” The words hit like a slap.
Tyler said nothing, just sat in silence.
Absolon burst out laughing, the sound ragged and almost manic. He laughed so hard he was nearly gasping for breath.
“Oh, God,” he wheezed after a while, wiping tears from his eyes. “I never thought this is where you two would end up.”
“I still remember that day you were on your knees begging for her, while I stood over you, treating you like a dog.”
“I always thought you two were head over heels for each other.”
He let out another harsh laugh. “Guess it wasn’t all that deep after all.”
Tyler stayed silent.
Suddenly, Absolon’s gaze sharpened, a nasty glint in his eyes. “If you hadn’t pulled your little tricks back then, she’d have been ruined by me for sure.”
Then, with a sneer, he added, “Ever regret saving her? Wouldn’t it have been better to let me beat her to death? Now look where you are—”
“I don’t regret it,” Tyler cut him off, his voice quiet but firm.
“I came here today to make up my mind,” he said.
He knew today was the day of Bella’s surgery, but he also knew Emilia would never let him see the girl.
So he came here instead.
