Felix pulled off his mask and gave them both a nod—especially to Theodore. “The surgery went really well,” he said, his voice reassuring. “As long as everything stays on track, she should be able to go home in five to ten days.”
Everyone in the room seemed to exhale at once, relief washing over their faces.
Even though Bella’s condition could be resolved with surgery, everyone here had been on edge, worried about her all the same.
“That’s something worth celebrating,” Christian said with a grin. “We should all go out for a meal!”
Emilia gave an exasperated little smile. “Let’s wait until Bella’s home, then we’ll celebrate.”
Felix nodded in agreement.
Joyce, standing a little apart from the others, glanced at Theodore with a complicated expression. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something had happened after she’d left the room that day—she distinctly remembered Emilia had never been open to Theodore before.
But looking at Emilia now, Joyce thought, If she really does like him, well, that wouldn’t be so bad. He’s certainly more reliable than Tyler.
Everyone was in a good mood. The last rays of sunset spilled into the hospital room, filling it with a gentle warmth.
Downstairs, Tyler waited quietly. He watched as the others came down together, their faces lit with genuine happiness, and understood at once—Bella’s surgery had been a success.
He got out of his car, found out which room she was in, and made his way upstairs. He stopped in the hallway, just outside the door, and looked in.
Inside, Emilia and Theodore sat by the bed—Emilia gently wiped Bella’s hands with a damp towel, while Theodore held the basin steady for her.
“When Bella’s discharged, she’ll probably need someone professional to help at home—maybe a nurse or a carer,” Theodore was saying. “My family’s known someone reliable for years, or you could ask Felix or Joyce for recommendations. I’m sure they know someone good too.”
Emilia didn’t object, just nodded as she continued tending to Bella. “I’ll meet them when the time comes and see who’s the best fit.”
Their conversation was so ordinary, so relaxed—it could have been any couple talking about daily life.
