At the heart of it all was Emilia.
She took a generous sip of wine, her spirits soaring with the thrill of this victory.
The room buzzed with her laughter and lively conversation; the atmosphere was electric.
It wasn’t the final triumph, not yet, but it was a promising start—a reason to celebrate.
The tension in her chest eased, if only a little.
After another round of dancing with Christian, Joyce, and the others, Emilia made her way back to Bella’s side.
Theodore was nearby, handing out plates and keeping a watchful eye on Bella as she sat happily in her booster seat, nibbling on snacks and chatting away.
“Mr. Theodore, now that I’m just like the other kids, can I visit your house more often to see your cat?” Bella asked eagerly.
“Last time, George showed me a video of Coco learning a new trick, but I haven’t seen it yet.”
Theodore gently wiped a crumb from the corner of her mouth, his voice warm. “Of course you can. Just let Miss Emilia know, and you can come over to play with Coco anytime.”
Bella immediately looked up at Emilia, her eyes wide with hope.
She’d grown more comfortable around Emilia, slowly opening up and letting her in.
Emilia’s heart swelled at Bella’s change.
She pinched Bella’s soft, round cheek and smiled. “Of course you can, sweetheart. You don’t have to ask—you're my daughter now.”
Theodore nodded in agreement. “And mine, too.”
Bella’s dark eyes darted between the two of them, then curved into a crescent-moon smile.
“Okay!” she chirped.
…
While laughter filled that side of the evening, elsewhere, Tyler and Vivienne sat in uneasy silence as Tyler drove her home after dinner.
When they reached her building, he stopped the car, but Vivienne didn’t get out.
“Tyler,” she said suddenly, breaking the quiet.
