Vivienne explained quietly, “He’s found out I was faking depression. Do you think he’ll go digging into my other medical records over at St. Mark’s?”
She paused, eyes darting around to make sure no one was watching. Her voice dropped even lower.
“In any case, he can’t find out I’ve been pretending to be sick. Get your friends at St. Mark’s to help. Four months from now, whether it’s a medical miracle or just a misdiagnosis, we need to have an answer ready.”
There was silence on the other end of the line.
Vivienne took a breath, then added, “You’re the one I love most. I won’t forget that—without you, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”
Her gaze was calm, calculated, as she lied without a hint of guilt.
“Everything I’m doing now is for our future, isn’t it?”
“I haven’t let him touch me, not once. Isn’t that proof enough?” Vivienne softened her tone, coaxing, “I love you.”
At last, the voice on the other end relented, growing gentle. “Alright. I understand.”
After hanging up, Vivienne scanned her surroundings once more to make sure no one had overheard. Only then did she allow herself to breathe out in relief.
…
Upstairs, on the other side of the house, Emilia had drifted back to sleep. For reasons she couldn’t explain, her dreams were filled with memories from long ago.
Her father’s death. Her stepfather’s violence. The two times Tyler had saved her life.
And then, all the ways Tyler had betrayed her.
The searing pain as she tumbled down the stairs.
Emilia jolted awake, her heart pounding.
For a moment, she couldn’t even remember where she was.
“Emily?” The gentle voice brought her back. She turned her head to see Theodore Glenn by her side.
