Back then, they'd only been married a short while, and the way that whole incident was handled left a bitter taste.
She'd seen that manager—Eugene—just once, when the other party left.
His expression that day was hard to read, almost mocking, with a hint of ridicule in his eyes.
How could she describe it? Teasing? Maybe even a little scornful?
Before leaving, Eugene had tossed a parting shot at Tyler: "Tyler, so this is your wife?"
That line had been even stranger.
After all, it wasn't as if their marriage was a secret. She'd been with Tyler for seven years, and ever since graduation, she was often seen around Erickson Holdings. As the head of acquisitions, Eugene couldn't possibly not know who she was.
She'd always felt there was something fishy about all of it, but whenever she brought it up with Tyler, he clammed up and refused to talk.
Thinking it over, Emilia made sure to tell the police everything she remembered.
She could only hope they'd get to the bottom of it soon.
After the officers finished questioning her, they prepared to leave. As they headed out, the female detective paused and said, "By the way, your car's been repaired. When you're feeling better, remember to pick it up."
Emilia nodded. "Thank you."
Once the police had gone, Detective Cynthia headed back to the station with her partner.
At the precinct, the team gathered to analyze the case.
Photos of the main people involved—Tyler, Vivienne, Eugene, and others—were laid out, with notes scribbled beside each.
"They're all suspects. Should we start interviews?" one officer asked. "Should we question her husband about the accident first?"
Cynthia hesitated, recalling how she'd tried calling Tyler from Emilia's phone that day, but he'd never picked up. "There's a web of connections between these people. We'll need to approach the interviews carefully."
Her partner, the same officer who'd driven Emilia to the hospital, nodded in agreement.
"His own wife was hit by a car and fighting for her life, but he was off with his mistress. We tried calling him over and over—he never answered. Doesn't that seem odd to you?"
Just then, another officer handed over a file.
"Here's the latest info," he said. "Tyler and Emilia have already started divorce proceedings. They're in the mandatory waiting period right now."
He'd just gotten word that she was exhausted from taking care of Parker and had gone to a nearby hotel to rest, so he'd come over.
He pushed open the door to the hospital room and saw Parker lying in bed.
The old man was still unconscious.
A nurse was turning Parker over to wash his back, but even with all the movement, Parker didn't stir.
It was clear things weren't looking good.
Out of nowhere, Emilia's image flickered in Tyler's mind.
He remembered—it had always been her who'd cared for his grandfather when he was ill.
Watching the nurse struggle with Parker's weight, nearly losing her grip and almost dropping him, Tyler rushed forward to help.
He was heavy.
Once again, Tyler thought of Emilia's thin, frail figure and realized—she'd never complained about any of this. She'd handled it all in silence.
