Looking at the scene playing out before her, Vera’s chest tightened, her breath hitched as her hands trembled with both embarrassment and bitterness.
She felt ridiculous; she had been the one who nearly had her teeth out of her mouth if not for the quick intervention of the guard standing nearby, yet another is being checked for harm.
It seems that in this life, she would always be a worthless piece of trash.
After he had made sure Jessica was fine, he slowly turned to face Vera. His gaze was icy cold, with no emotion on his face. It was as though he had never seen or known her before.
To put it mildly, she is just a stranger to him.
Looking at that expression, Vera clenched her fist subtly by her sides as she braced herself for Davis’ words, which she knew no doubt would stab her heart, leaving only pain and pain in its wake.
Just as she expected, Davis’ voice rumbled through the pin-drop silence. "Vera, to hurt her? could you really afford it?" he asked.
Jessica stared at Vera for a while. She was still surprised at the turn of events.
From the time she saw them approaching, she was ready to tell her husband off, but the stumbling Vera left her with no word to say.
Davis’ mouth opened to speak further but she tugged lightly at the hem of his suit.
"Forget it," she said.
Ignoring her words, he continued, "I don’t care what it is you want to do, but you see her, you keep away," he said, his voice laced with venom.
Vera blinked back the tears that threatened to fall.
For one thing, she didn’t do it intentionally, and yet if not for the timely interference of the guard, she would really be so embarrassed that she’d plead with the earth to swallow her whole.
Davis’ words might have hurt, but more hurting was the suppressed murmurings going around them.
"She really knew how to seek attention."
"It’s not just seeking attention but throwing herself on him in the presence of his wife... shameless and fearless."
"Tsk, tsk... shameless mistress."
"Never knew the Louis family to be this embarrassing."
"Clinging to the same man she rejected in the past?"
"My memory is really refreshed to the true definition of shamelessness."
Vera stood rooted to the spot, her face twisting with several shades of embarrassment. She regretted why she had followed Davis.
She lifted her gaze and settled on Jessica, who had ignored her but was all over Davis as they whispered and smiled at each other.
"Why did you come and not call me?" Davis asked as he carefully and gradually led her to open the car door.
He helped her settle into the car; she removed her glasses just as he boarded, shutting the door.
The driver didn’t board, and the car didn’t pull away.
Inside the car, Davis pulled her closer to himself as he kissed her deeply, only letting her go to catch her breath.
At his signal, the driver boarded the car, and slowly it left the group. Vera stood rooted, her feet unable to move forward even as she wished.
In the car, Jessica comfortably snuggled in his arms. She had been really tired from the day’s stress, and with his presence and scent, she felt every of her senses relax.
She was certain he would hold the world if it fell. With her conviction in place, it didn’t take long, and she drifted into the dreamland.
By the time they got home, the sun had already dipped down the horizon, and the dark clouds took over.
The car stopped at the doorstep. A guard alighted and opened the door.
Davis stepped and carefully carried her out of the and with steady steps returned to their room.
~Hotel Room~
Julian sat on the desk, his laptop glowing with light as he handled his online meeting with the members of the Board with regards to the ongoing project of the Anders Group.
Though he had arrived in Country Y with the purpose of bringing back his sister, he was still as much the President of the group, and several matters he handled online, and for some, he traveled back to the country to settle.
Maxwell pushed the door in and entered, noting he was holding a meeting, he carefully closed the door with a click as not to disrupt the meeting.
Julia glanced at him briefly as he paused briefly beside him but he continued with the meeting.
Maxwell sighed. He would have preferred giving him a report of the situation, but seeing the crucial nature of the meeting, he made a decision to report to him once he was through.
With a deep breath escaping his nostrils, he went over to the wardrobe and pulled it open.
He carefully brought out their suitcase, making sure not to disrupt his meeting.
For one, he knew Julian would definitely request moving tonight since the house is already in place.
So it would be better if he arranged the items before he finished the meeting. With seriousness, he packed their suitcases.
By the time Julian finished his meeting, their suitcase was already set, standing at the foot of the bed while awaiting instructions.
