“Kailynn, come on, let’s go home.” I sat down next to her and gently pried the drink from her hand.

She blinked, head cocked to the side, squinting at me like she was trying to figure out if I was real. Then, all at once, she recognized me and threw her arms around my waist, burying her face in my neck and bursting into tears. Not just quiet sniffles—she wailed, completely losing it.

Between sobs, she choked out her heartache, barely able to get the words out.

“Avery, what’s wrong with me? Why am I invisible to him? Why can’t he see me?”

“Avery, why doesn’t he love me? He used to say I was spoiled, that I couldn’t do anything for myself. But now I can do it all—I dress up, I cook, I take care of the house, I make money. Why doesn’t he care?”

“Avery, is it because I don’t love him enough? Is that why I disappear when he’s mad at me? But I’ve given him everything. If he wanted my life, I’d give it to him. Why? Avery, tell me why he can’t love me.”

There’s never a real reason. Sometimes love just isn’t there, no matter what you do.

When you meet the right person, none of the other stuff matters—not status, not money, not age, not talent. It all fades away.

“Because he’s got a broken heart, mush for brains, and must be blind if he can’t see how amazing you are.” I put my arm around her shoulders. “Come on, let’s go home.”

It was only twenty minutes to my apartment, but the Foss family’s house was at least an hour away. If I tried to drop her off there, it’d be two hours on the road, and by then the sun would be coming up. I was dead tired, so I just brought her back to my place.

It took everything I had to get her through the door.

It took even more to help her shower and change into my pajamas and finally get her into bed.

Even asleep, her eyebrows were scrunched together, her lips still moving as she mumbled the same question over and over—why can’t he love me.
