From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 12

Remy’s name popped up on my phone, requesting a video call. I tapped accept, and Cindy’s adorable little face filled my screen.

She had her hair pulled up in perfect pigtails, grinning from ear to ear, her eyes bright and shiny. There was a little bead of sweat on her nose. I could tell from the background they were down by the river.

It was late, but the riverside still sounded lively. There had to be some big event happening.

“Mommy, there’s a fireworks show tonight! Daddy brought me to watch. Look, that’s Daddy over there.”

The camera shifted and suddenly Remy came into view. He looked tall and sharp in a light-colored suit, dazzling under the city lights.

Next to him, a girl in a white dress with long hair slipped into the frame. I couldn’t see her face clearly, but her sparkling earring caught the light and drew my eye.

“Avery, the fireworks show will be over in half an hour. I’ll get Cindy home and in bed on time, don’t worry.” Remy’s voice was as calm and gentle as always.

There wasn’t much left to say. I just reminded him to make sure Cindy didn’t get bitten by mosquitoes as her skin always reacts badly, then hung up.

By eleven, I was drifting off when I got a voice message from Remy. His voice sounded thick, like he’d been drinking. “Avery, I miss you. Come home soon, okay? I want to hold you while I sleep.”

That message just left me feeling restless.

I decided right then that when I got back, we needed to have a real talk about divorce, no more avoiding it.

But first, I needed a lawyer, someone I could trust to have my back.
