“As soon as possible.”
“The court will review your petition within seven business days. Once they accept the case, your husband will get the summons within five days. So, at most, he’ll have the papers in ten days. But before we move forward, I have to ask one more time—Ms. Greenwood, are you absolutely sure you want this divorce? Once we go to court, there’s no going back. If you change your mind, it’ll be too late.”
“I’m sure. More certain than pearls are real.”
Blake shot me a look, half admiring, half amazed. “I have to say, Ms. Greenwood, you seem so gentle and lovely, but your determination is something else. I respect that.”
At first, it sounded like a compliment. But the more I thought about it, the more it felt like there was something else behind his words.
Elliot hadn’t joined in the conversation at all—he’d just been staring at his computer, looking as serious as ever, like he was above whatever Blake and I were talking about. Then, out of nowhere, his voice cut through the room. It was cool, almost mocking. “People are unpredictable. You can spend more than a decade with someone and still be strangers. Who knows what a ruthless woman is capable of? The hardest things in the world to handle are petty men and complicated women.”
Blake tried to hide a laugh, turning away like a kid caught doing something sneaky. For a bigshot lawyer, he could be surprisingly mischievous.
Me: ……
Unpredictable people? A decade together? What was he even talking about? How did I manage to get on the boss’s bad side today? Was he trying to kill me with words?
When I first met Elliot, he seemed so distant and cold, with this air of sharp, untouchable authority. But after working together—especially after he saved my life—the wall between us started to crumble. These days, being around him felt almost easy, like we were old friends who just hadn’t seen each other in a while.
