The second I heard there was no signal, I broke out in a cold sweat.
Seriously? How could there be no service? This wasn’t the middle of nowhere. We were in a tourist spot. How could there not be coverage?
If Blake couldn’t save both of us, and with my stamina being pretty much nonexistent, what would we do if we couldn’t even call for help? Would I just be stuck here?
Turns out, I was overthinking it.
Bosses are bosses for a reason. Elliot and Blake didn’t get to where they are by being average, and Mr. Garcia? Well, there’s a reason he’s Mr. Garcia.
When I saw the rescue rope drop down, I finally realized what they’d been hauling in those huge backpacks. Not snacks, not cameras—just lifesaving gear for emergencies exactly like this.
Elliot gave the rope a few hard tugs to check if it was secure, then looked at me. “Think you can climb up? It’s not that high, less than a hundred meters. I’ll go after you.”
A hundred meters? That’s like more than thirty stories. Not that high?
I had zero interest in being a hero. My legs already felt like noodles, and I doubted I could even get over a curb right now, let alone climb a rope. I didn’t bother pretending. “Nope, not happening.”
Elliot snorted. “At least you’re honest.”
I just kept quiet. He could roll his eyes all he wanted. Survival was the only thing that mattered.
Besides, it’s not like he was going to leave me here.
He wrapped the rope around himself, tied it off with some complicated knot, and gave it another hard pull to make sure it was solid.
I watched him work, my nerves getting worse by the second.
Aren’t guys supposed to let girls go first in situations like this? Was he just going to tie himself up and leave me here?
Sure, I could try the rope again, but I didn’t know how to make that knot, and I definitely didn’t have the strength to pull myself up.
Motivated by pure fear, I stammered, “Boss, what about me if you go up first? I’m your best assistant. You can’t just leave me, right?”
Elliot glanced at me, that little amused glint in his eyes softening his usual stone-cold look. But his words were as deadpan as ever. “You can stay here and feed the snakes.”
