From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 149

There was really no way to keep talking about this, so I just mourned for him in my heart.

When I looked over at Elliot’s blank face, my chest tightened. Underneath all the respect I already had for him, I suddenly felt this wave of sadness and softness. No wonder he was almost thirty and had never been in a relationship. His heart was already taken by someone he wanted to protect for the rest of his life.

People who love that deeply—they deserve some kindness.

“Boss, your girl’s up there as a star now, watching you. She’d be so happy to see you making her favorite candy for her,” I said.

Elliot barely lifted his eyelids, his lips cold and sharp. “Shut up.”

I froze. Okay, message received.

Remy’s texts blew up my phone for a few minutes, then finally stopped.

The quiet was actually nice. I scrolled through some notes on my phone, pretending to study.

Around eight thirty that night, I started to hear the distant rumble of heavy machinery. Rescue must have finally started.

After my fourth piece of candy, my hands were tingling and my stomach felt hollow, twisting with hunger.

The road was eerily quiet. Hardly anyone got out of their cars.

I pressed my hand to my stomach, silently praying for this nightmare to end soon.

All of a sudden, I felt someone staring. When I turned, Elliot was watching me with that cool, distant look.

When I met his eyes, he just looked away, pulled out his phone, tapped on it, and then leaned back with his eyes closed like nothing happened.

Half an hour later, the sound of helicopter blades thundered overhead.

Curious, I stuck my head out to look. A helicopter was flying straight toward us.

“Boss, there’s a chopper coming our way. Looks kind of familiar,” I said.
