From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 151

There was something about that glance—an odd sense of déjà vu, like I’d seen him somewhere before but couldn’t quite place it.

By the time I made it back to my place in the city, it was already well past midnight. I’d just driven over four hundred kilometers for a dinner party that never even happened and nearly died on the way back. To make things worse, Mr. White had changed his plans last minute and never showed up at Willowstead, so the whole trip was basically pointless.

I dragged myself into my room, exhausted, only to have Remy’s calls and texts start pouring in, one after another like a tidal wave.

“Avery, I came to save you. Where are you? I couldn’t find you.”

“I checked every car and still didn’t see you. Where are you, really?”

“Avery, are you okay? Please, just tell me if you’re alright. I’m begging you—just send me something, even a single word.”

“Avery, I’m not lying this time. I really did come to save you. Look at my hand—I mean it, I’m not faking anything.”

Then he sent a photo. His hand was a mess—fingers torn up, skin split and raw, blood everywhere. The watch on his wrist was the one I’d given him for his birthday. I recognized it instantly.

So the volunteer shouting in the wind, refusing to go to the hospital, was Remy the whole time?

God, love really does mess with your head. Once I stopped loving him, I couldn’t even recognize his voice anymore.

Still, seeing his hand all cut up made my eyes sting with tears. Was Remy just hurting himself to make me feel something, or was he honestly trying to prove a point?

Whatever. I couldn’t do this anymore. No more drama, no more performances.

The part of my life that belonged to him was over. There was no going back, no matter what.

The accident had been serious enough to block traffic for a while, but aside from one staff member with minor injuries and another with a more serious one, everyone else at the event was fine.

I ate the late-night snacks the hotel sent up, took a shower, and got into bed. But after two scares in a single day, there was no way I was getting a good night’s sleep. My dreams kept throwing me off high places—buildings, bridges, Ferris wheels. The worst was falling from the very top of a Ferris wheel, watching myself hit the ground in a pool of blood, lifeless.
