From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 16

Remy went flying with a single kick. He landed hard, coughing and clutching his chest, but his glare stayed locked on Elliot. Blood tinged his lips as he spat, “Avery is my wife. Don’t touch her. Or I’ll make sure you regret it for the rest of your life!”

“Just stop! This is Elliot Swanson, the CEO of Elite Tech. If he hadn’t helped me, I never would’ve made it back today. All you care about is getting me here, but did you ever think how I’d make it back from halfway around the world? Or how scared I was? Since I arrived, have you even asked how I’m doing? Have you said a single word about Mom?”

Remy hesitated. The tension melted from his face. With his assistant Mike’s support, he got to his feet and reached out a hand, trying to smooth things over. “So you’re the new president of Elite Tech, Mr. Swanson. I… I overreacted. I’m sorry. Please don’t take it to heart. Man to man, I’m sure you get it. I’m Remy Thompson, CEO of Thompson Corporation. Nice to meet you.”

Elliot didn’t even look at him. His voice was cold. “Not interested.”

And then, he turned and walked away, never once glancing back. In that moment, Remy looked more humiliated than I’d ever seen him.

When the dust finally settled, all my strength drained away. My head buzzed. I leaned against the wall and shuffled toward the operating room, my hand tracing the cold metal door. Tears spilled down my cheeks, unstoppable.

Remy came over. The harshness he’d shown Elliot was gone, and he was once again the gentle, thoughtful man I remembered.

Half an hour later, once I’d calmed down, I asked him how he’d even learned about Mom getting sick.

He looked away, cleared his throat, and said, “A friend of mine’s sick. I came to visit and just happened to run into you, so I followed along.”

Remy had this little tell he probably didn’t even realize—whenever he lied, his eyes would flicker side to side. Most people wouldn’t notice, but after five years of marriage, I caught it every time.

A few days ago, I’d chatted with the girlfriend of one of Remy’s friends. She mentioned Julia—who’d been living overseas—had gotten seriously ill and was back for good. Putting two and two together, it wasn’t hard to figure out that Remy’s “friend” was Julia.

“I know about your friends too. Maybe I should stop by and see them, since I’m already at the hospital.”
