The night wind was freezing but nothing could cool the anger burning inside me.

Cindy was terrified. She curled up in a tiny ball, barely breathing, like she was trying to disappear. I didn’t have the patience or the energy to comfort her. All I could think about was finding Remy and giving him a slap or two—hell, maybe even knocking him flat if I could.

I found Remy standing with Mike right outside the emergency room. The hallway stretched out, silent and empty, and my footsteps sounded too loud. Remy turned around and for a second, seeing that face I once loved so stupidly, I hated myself for ever being that blind. All I wanted was to wipe that look off his face.

“Avery, what are you doing here?” Remy came over, trying to sound gentle. “You should go home and rest. You’ve got work tomorrow, and Cindy needs you. I’ll handle things here. Don’t worry.”

I marched over and kicked him straight in the shin. Before he could say another word, I demanded, “Did you know Julia has AIDS and late-stage syphilis? Did you know?”

He looked stunned. He glanced down at his leg with a frown, then looked at me, refusing to answer. Instead, he shot back, “How did you find out? Avery, were you investigating her?”

Those words were the last straw. All the anger I’d been holding in just exploded.

I didn’t care who was watching, or if Cindy was huddled in the corner, scared out of her mind. I couldn’t hold back anymore. I jumped at Remy and slapped him across the face as hard as I could.

“Remy, are you even human? You knew how sick Julia was, but you still brought her into our home. You let Cindy eat with her, sleep next to her, even shower together. Even animals protect their own children. How could you be so heartless? For a woman who left you, you’d risk your own daughter’s life. You’re unbelievable—you’re not even a person.”

I was shaking, so angry I thought I might actually pass out.

Seriously, what kind of father could ever do something like this?
