I was honestly speechless.
Remy was straight-up insane.
Just minutes ago, he nearly choked someone to death. Now he was back, acting like the hero, defending her like none of it ever happened. The guy was completely off the rails—there was no saving him at this point.
But the worst part? He wasn’t wrong. I didn’t actually have the power to stop any of this.
They’re Cindy’s biological parents. No matter how much I cared, I didn’t have a say. If I really wanted nothing to do with them anymore, I should just walk away.
But the more I tried to breathe, the angrier I got.
Our marriage was over, but that didn’t mean Remy could just shrug off his responsibilities as a dad. At the very least, he should be thinking about Cindy. Instead, he knew the risks and still wanted to throw her right into the chaos.
What kind of parent does that?
“Remy, have you lost your mind? For the sake of some woman who ran out on her kid, you’re willing to throw your own daughter under the bus? If you’re so eager to die with Julia, go right ahead, but Cindy is six. How can you even think about doing this to her?”
Remy just stared at me, silent, then dragged his hands through his hair and lit another cigarette. There was a red mark on his neck—I must’ve scratched him earlier.
“Avery, don’t talk about Julia like that. She had her reasons for leaving. She’s been through enough. Yeah, she made mistakes, but how I handle it is between me and her. I don’t want to hear you bashing her.”
He paused, took a long drag, then said, “I only found out the truth recently. If you want to know, fine. Five years ago, Thompson Corporation was falling apart. We lost a bid, and a foreign company came after us, cut off our funding. Their boss noticed Julia—she’d just had a baby. He threatened her: either go with him, or Thompson would go under. Julia didn’t want to see my family’s legacy destroyed, so she swallowed her pride and went with him. She didn’t abandon me or Cindy, she didn’t.”
