I’ll admit it—I was completely caught off guard.
Never in a million years did I think I’d see the day when Marissa, who’d always eyed me with barely hidden contempt, would actually sit down and talk to me like this. And not just talk, but speak to me honestly, almost like she cared.
“Surprised? You don’t need to be. I’m a woman too, you know, and I’ve been your age before. All the Thompsons are hopeless romantics, but they only ever love one person for their whole life. Remy’s dad fell for that vixen, and Remy’s always had Julia on his mind.
My unhappy ending? I brought that on myself. But you, Avery, you’re innocent. The only reason you got pulled into all this mess was because you happen to look like someone else. It’s not worth it. Get divorced sooner, and go find someone who truly loves you. Don’t be like me, realizing too late that nothing can be undone.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Thompson. I’ve already filed for divorce from Remy. It won’t be long before it’s all over between us. Is there something else you wanted to talk about today?”
Marissa’s thought process was always a little strange, but one thing about her—she never did anything without a reason.
“There were a few things I wanted to say, but thinking it over, you’re a smart girl. Better to let you figure it out for yourself.
You’ve done really well all these years. You genuinely cared for Cindy, and you truly loved Remy.
Making up your mind to get a divorce isn’t easy. Take this, it might help. I have to go now. Take your time with lunch.”
“But Mrs. Thompson, after the divorce, I’m going to get a share of Thompson Corporation’s assets. Doesn’t that bother you?” I stopped her before she left.
She just shook her head, patted my hand, and didn’t say a word. She left a rectangular box on the table and walked out slowly.
Feeling uncomfortable, I reached for a sanitizing wipe and cleaned my hand thoroughly—both the back and the palm, twice, just to be sure.
