From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 21

I nearly jumped out of my skin, but once my heart stopped racing, I realized it was just Julie standing in the doorway.

She was wearing a flimsy, short nightdress that left her legs completely bare.

Remy hadn’t seen this coming either. For a second, he just stared. Then he yanked the bedsheet off the bed and wrapped it around himself, his face turning stormy. “Who told you you could come in without knocking? Get out.”

Julie’s eyes went wide and glossy with tears. She took a step back, voice trembling. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I’ll be more careful.”

“Julie, let me remind you, you’re just the nurse I hired. You don’t have any right to come into the master bedroom whenever you feel like it. I’ll let it slide this time. If it happens again, you’re fired.”

Remy’s voice was colder and sharper than I’d ever heard, almost like he looked down on her.

I wasn’t about to defend her. She was obviously in the wrong. “Julie can’t even handle basic manners. I’m starting to question if she’s even qualified.”

“I’ll ask Mike about her tomorrow,” Remy said. “If she’s not up to the job, we’ll get someone else. It’s not like we have to keep her.”

He pulled on some loungewear and left the room. He didn’t come back before I fell asleep.

The next day was Saturday. After breakfast, Cindy was glued to my side, begging me to read her a picture book.

Honestly, she could read these books herself by now. She just wanted me to read for her, probably an excuse to get some extra attention.

It was true I hadn’t really been around for her lately. First I was away on a business trip, then my mom passed away, and after that I spent over a week recovering from my injury. It’d been forever since I’d spent real time with her.

I still wasn’t in the best mood, but I didn’t want to let her down. I tried to sound cheerful and started reading.

“The Queen is the stepmother, right? She’s so mean. She tried to hurt Snow White so many times. Mommy, Julie says all stepmothers are bad, that they’re monsters who eat kids.”

Cindy said it so lightly, but it hit me hard.
