Remy’s suit was tossed carelessly on the floor, his tie hanging loose around his neck, shirt collar yanked open to reveal red scratch marks across his skin.

Julie was in a silk slip that barely covered her thighs, one strap falling off her shoulder, exposing a stretch of pale skin that almost glowed in the light.

Remy had her pressed hard against the wall, one hand gripping her jaw, eyes burning with an anger so sharp it felt dangerous.

“Remy, please—don’t. I can’t take this,” Julie whispered, her voice shaky.

“Can’t take it? Didn’t you run off with that foreign guy? Why are you back? Why didn’t you just die out there? And now you come to me for help? Have you got no shame?” His voice was low, cold, each word like a slap.

“I warned you. Stay out of Avery’s way. You burned her on purpose, didn’t you? And what Cindy said—that was you, right? Julia, you’re unbelievable.”

Julia’s eyes filled with tears, but she stared up at him, looking small and fragile, like she might shatter if he let go.

“What happened back then was my fault. I shouldn’t have left you and Cindy. But Remy, believe it or not, I never stopped loving you. Not for a second. When that monster gave me to his clients, when I was dumped on that ship, the only thing that kept me going was you.”

“I didn’t want to hurt Avery. I just got jealous. You treat her so well, and I wanted that. You promised me, Remy. You said you’d always love me, that you’d never give up on us. Has five years erased all that? Maybe you can forget, but I can’t.”

“I know I’m not good enough for you or Cindy. I don’t deserve to be her mom. If I wasn’t dying, I never would’ve come back. Please, Remy, don’t push me away. Let me stay. Just for a little while. If I can die with you and our daughter nearby, that’s enough. It won’t be long, Remy. Soon, I’ll be gone, and you’ll never have to see me again.”

Remy’s jaw tightened and he swore under his breath. His eyes looked wild, almost red, and then he crashed his mouth onto Julia’s, kissing her with a hunger that was all pain and anger, like he wanted to devour her.

Julia trembled in his arms, eyes shining with tears, her vulnerability almost beautiful. She wrapped her arms around his neck, standing on tiptoe to kiss him back.
