My father was a university professor. He passed away a few years ago because of illness. My mom teaches high school math and she’s retiring next month.
On paper, I come from a family of scholars. We’re respectable, but when it comes to money, we’re nowhere near the same league as the Thompsons.
That’s why Marissa always looked down on me. She never hid it. If Remy hadn’t put his foot down, I wouldn’t have ever married him.
But that doesn’t mean Marissa gets to walk all over me.
“Go ahead. Am I stopping you?” I said, keeping my voice cool. “Or do you want me to make a public announcement as Remy’s wife, recruiting a mistress for him?”
“What are you even saying?” Marissa snapped, her face twisting up. “If it weren’t for Cindy, you’d never have become part of the Thompson family. Don’t think a piece of paper makes you Mrs. Thompson. If I feel like it, I can kick you out any time I want.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, don’t get carried away. Ever heard of marriage law? Even if I really did divorce Remy one day, just like you want, we’d split everything fifty-fifty.”
Marissa had never been talked back to like that before. Her face turned red and she came at me, hands raised, ready to hit.
I stood my ground, ready for whatever she tried.
Then Remy rushed in, not even bothering to take off his shoes. He jumped between us, and Marissa’s slap landed squarely on him.
“Mom, what are you doing?” Remy sounded shocked, his expression tight.
“You’re siding with her again! She’s terrible to Cindy but I’m not allowed to say a word? Am I even your mother anymore? Do you even care about Cindy?”
Remy rubbed his forehead, his jaw clenched. “Mom, Avery has done more for Cindy than you ever have. Please, stop picking on Avery. She’s done enough, and then some. And don’t talk like this in front of Cindy. Avery raised her, so she’s Cindy’s real mom. Avery is my wife. Please respect her. If you can’t, then don’t come here anymore. Even Avery’s own mom never treated her like this, and you have no right.”
