If John even dared to make something up, I’d slap him with a bureaucratic misconduct charge that would stick forever.
“Forget it. I’m too old to argue with kids,” I said, waving him off.
John knew I wasn’t going to let him off easy today. He shot me a dirty look, huffed, and stomped away, practically tripping over his own feet.
How hilarious.
Does he really think I’m a pushover? Please. I just can’t be bothered to stoop to the level of these petty men.
He’s just a deputy manager. What, he thinks he’s above the law now?
Worst case, I’ll quit. If they don’t want me here, I’ll find somewhere else that does.
Honestly, I could do nothing for the rest of my life and still have enough money to live comfortably for several lifetimes. There’s no place on earth I can’t buy a house or get a good meal.
No way am I putting up with his crap.
I took a quick walk through the tech department, didn’t even bother going into my office, and headed straight for the top floor to find Ryan in the executive suite.
Ryan just happened to be coming out of Elliot’s office. When he saw me, he greeted me with a big smile.
“We’ve finished the investigation into Zoey. All the evidence has been sent to Legal and HR—her punishment will be announced at this week’s meeting.”
I felt a rush of relief, like I’d finally come up for air after being underwater for too long.
“Thanks, Ryan. I’ll stop by Legal to pick up the evidence and hand it over to the police if that’s okay?”
His blue eyes sparkled. “No need. The company’s Legal team already filed a complaint against Zoey under your name last Friday. Just wait for the summons—it should be any day now.”
With that weight off my shoulders, I went back to my office, finally ready to focus on work.
My phone rang.
Marissa.
“Hello, who is this?”
“Avery, you spiteful woman, drop the act! Get to the hospital right now. Remy’s running a fever of 104—it’s all because of you. Get over here and take care of him!”
