From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 9

“Please,” Remy said, gripping my hand so tight it almost hurt. His voice was full of desperation. “Avery, Cindy and I both need you. Please don’t leave us. I’ll start seeing a doctor, I swear. Let’s not get divorced, okay?”

The way he clung to me just made me feel tired. He had no real guts, no accountability.

Or maybe I’d just loved him too much, and that made him believe I’d always stick around no matter what he did. He seemed to think that as long as he said a few sweet words, gave me a hug or a kiss, and maybe bought me a present or two, everything would magically go back to normal.

“I heard everything you said on the phone that night,” I said, my voice low. “I was right behind you. Tell me, what exactly did you promise Julia? If there was even one day in the past five years when you actually saw me as your wife, just be honest with me.”

Remy froze. He dropped his eyes, his lips pressed into a hard line. He tried to speak a couple times, but nothing came out.

“You can’t say it, can you? Let me guess. You promised Julia you’d never sleep with me. You’d stay loyal to her, even now. Am I right?”

Remy’s head snapped up, shock and pain flickering in his eyes. His right hand kept clenching and unclenching, and his jaw was so tight I could see where he’d bitten down on the inside of his cheek.

So I was right.

“Avery, I’m sorry. There are some things I just can’t tell you. But you have to know, I really do love you. Everything I did is for you. Isn’t that enough?”

“Loving someone means letting go of the past and being there for the person in front of you. You’re still holding on to a promise you made to your ex. That just means you never got over her. You want Julia’s love—and you want me to take care of you and Cindy too. Remy, you can’t have everything.”

“I don’t...” Remy blurted out, reaching for me. He hugged me from behind, his cheek pressed against the back of my neck. His breath was warm on my skin, making goosebumps rise on my arms. “I don’t love her anymore. I know who I love now, Avery. It’s you. Only you.”

Those words sounded so shameless.
