From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 92

Remy’s friend—someone who’d never sugarcoat the truth—was the one talking. He was the kind of guy who called things as he saw them, no matter what.

Remy, though, just stared at the ash at the tip of his cigarette, completely zoning out. It was obvious he wasn’t taking any of it to heart.

When Kailynn found out that Remy had faked amnesia to fool me—just so he could play the grieving lover at Julia’s bedside—she was so mad she nearly kicked my door in. I had to physically stop her from storming the place.

Honestly, the whole scene at the hospital was so over-the-top, I’d already guessed Remy was behind it. If he wanted to play games, I was happy to let him. He set the whole thing up himself, so if it blew up in his face, that was on him. He totally deserved whatever mess he got.

On the way back to the private room, Kailynn was ranting nonstop. “Why is that jerk so full of himself? You spoiled him, that’s why—now he thinks he’s untouchable. So, what’s the deal with the divorce? My brother can hook you up with a top lawyer from out of state. I’ll get you the number later. Just get it done already. Seriously, guys like him? One more day and you’ll need a hazmat suit. And listen to me, Cindy is a hard no. My great-grandma used to say, ‘You can’t stick lamb to dog meat,’ so don’t go making life harder for yourself. Hello? I’m spilling my guts here—are you even listening?”

“I’m listening, I promise. Every single word,” I replied quickly.

Kailynn and I had grown up together, and she could never stand to see me put up with anyone’s crap.

“That’s more like it,” she said, leaning her head onto my shoulder as she pushed open the door to the lounge.

After the dinner wrapped up, Jeffery offered to drive me home, but I turned him down with a polite smile.

He just stood there on the steps, watching as I got into Kailynn’s car. I knew exactly what was going on—his offer was just an excuse, and he definitely had his own agenda. Something about the way he acted earlier made me uncomfortable, and honestly, whatever childhood feelings we once had were ancient history now. Ten years had wiped all that away.

We’d driven a while before Kailynn glanced in the rearview mirror. “Jeffery’s still standing on those steps,” she said.
