Elliot’s voice had a depth and warmth most men could only wish for—a low, smooth baritone that wrapped around me like a velvet ribbon. It was elegant and clear, but there was something about it, a kind of midnight sweetness, that made my heart skip a beat.

I snapped back to reality and reached up, almost on autopilot, to wipe the corner of my mouth.

My lips were dry, and so was the back of my hand. My cheeks burned hot, and my heart was racing.

Not that there wasn’t a lot to look at. His torso was beautiful, except for a few thin red scratches, like something sharp had grazed his skin. Two of them were deeper, dark red against his pale skin, almost like streaks of garnet in porcelain. Instead of ruining his looks, they made him seem even more dangerous and magnetic.

“Mr. Swanson, your suit jacket got ruined. I’ll buy you a new one, but you’ll have to wait a little. Last night I… you… we… what exactly happened?”

I just wanted to find something to talk about, anything to cover up the awkwardness. But my brain glitched out and gave me the worst possible question. I cringed inside, wishing I could just disappear.

“What do you think happened?” Elliot turned to look at me, completely unfazed, his brown eyes deep and unreadable in the soft light, like he could see right through me.

“I…” Honestly, everything I knew about men and women came from books. I’d never actually experienced any of it in real life. If I knew the answer, would I even be asking him?

Of course. Billionaire logic—always answering a question with another question, as if he was running some board meeting.

“Where’s your phone? Open your messages.” Elliot pulled out his own phone, his fingers long and steady as he typed.
