But now? The big spender and the rich bestie were clearly tight, and the gossip was spreading like wildfire.

Liam hauled Freya upstairs to the women’s clothing section.

He was like a man possessed, grabbing every outfit he liked and telling the staff to bag it in Freya’s size.

The clerk piped up, “You can try them on to see how they look.”

Liam brushed her off. “No time. If they don’t work, we’ll donate them.”

The clerk clammed up and started packing.

They got home, weighed down with bags, only to see a familiar car parked out front.

Liam’s face went tight as a drum.

In the living room, his parents were waiting.

Rose had already served them coffee, but their faces were like storm clouds.

Freya had been through this song and dance before. She knew the playbook.

Sure enough, Liam’s dad, Joseph, spoke first. “Why’re you back so late?”

Liam pulled Freya close, nudging her slightly behind him. “Took Freya shopping for clothes. Mom, Dad, what’s up? Why’re you here?”

Bang-

Joseph slammed the table so hard the cups rattled. “If I hadn’t shown up, my grandkid would be gone!”

Liam blinked, totally thrown. “What grandkid?”

Freya had never been big on kids-not yet, anyway.

But Liam’s parents were like a broken record, showing up every couple of weeks to pile on the pressure.

Liam tried to keep things light. “We’re still young, you know? We want a few years to ourselves. Kids can wait.”

“You can wait, but the kid can’t!” Joseph snatched a piece of paper from the table and tossed it at Liam. ‘Read it yourself!”

Liam picked it up off the floor. It was a medical report. A pregnancy test, to be exact.

It read: [Result: Viable embryo, 4 weeks.]

[Name: Natalie Stone.]

Madison, Liam’s mom, shot to her feet, livid. “Liam, what’s wrong with you? You’ve got a kid on the way-why would you throw that away? You sticking with Freya to let our family die out?”

Liam’s voice spiked. “We’re not saying we won’t have kids, just not right now!”

“So you’re not denying this Natalie’s kid is yours?” Joseph fired back.

Liam froze, glancing at Freya. “I didn’t—”

Madison cut in sharp. “If it’s yours, that’s that. We’ve already brought Natalie to the family estate to take care of her and the baby. As for you, Liam, that kid needs a dad. Step up.”

Joseph and Madison stormed out.

The living room was dead silent, like the air had been sucked out.

Rose, who’d overheard everything and probably pieced it together, kept her lips sealed.

Freya, seeing how old Rose was, told her to take a break.
