Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Tucked beside the divorce papers was another file.

Freya had hired a private eye to dig into Natalie’s life.

Twenty-three, barely scraped through high school, trained as a nurse, from some backwater town. Her parents were hustling odd jobs in Haventon, while her deadbeat brother gambled away whatever they had.

When Freya first caught on to Liam’s fling with Natalie, she racked her brain trying to make sense of it.

A girl with plain looks, an okay figure, no real education, and a family straight out of a soap opera-what was it about her that had Liam so hooked?

‘What, is it just those pretty hands of hers?’ Freya wondered. ‘Or after fifteen years together, is he just bored with me?’

When Liam sauntered back in, Freya was planted in her chair, acting like she hadn’t just been snooping in the garage, uncovering his dirty little secret.

He flashed a lazy smile, his eyes still warm, as he slipped his phone into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. “Hey, babe, gotta step out for a sec,” he said, sounding almost apologetic.

Rose came out with a steaming mug of ginger tea. “Mr. Grant, you’re heading out this late? Work stuff, I’m guessing?”

Liam gave a quiet “Yup,” barely audible. “Someone real important’s treating me to dinner.”

Liam’s tires screeched as he tore out of the driveway.

Rose turned to Freya. “Ma’am, have some of honey water to warm you up. Mr. Grant asked me to whip it up just for you.”

Freya took the mug. “It’s too hot right now. I’ll drink it when it cools. It’s late-you should hit the sack.”

“You sure you’ll have it?”

“Yeah, I got it.”

Rose untied her apron and left the villa.

Freya poured the tea down the toilet, flushed it, then grabbed her sunglasses and a mask. She slipped out the door.

Flagging a cab, she leaned in. “Tail that car up ahead.”

Half an hour later, Liam’s black Range Rover rolled to a stop outside a beat-up old apartment building.

A few minutes later, a slim figure darted out, hopping into the passenger seat like she owned it.

Those delicate hands slid onto his broad shoulders, and she leaned up, planting a kiss on his lips.

Even though Freya had braced herself, seeing them lock lips in the car hit her like a freight train. She sat there, stunned.

“Ma’am, they’re moving. Keep following?” the driver asked.

Freya blinked, snapping out of it. “Yeah, stay on ’em.”

Ten minutes later, Liam and Natalie strolled into a bar.

From the moment they stepped out of the car, Natalie was glued to his arm, chattering away like a chirpy little bird.

A few guys were waiting outside a private room.

When they saw Liam and Natalie, they grinned. “Hi, Liam! Hey, Ms. Stone!”

Natalie eyed the bar’s swanky decor, pouting playfully. “I thought I was buying you dinner! I can’t afford a place like this!”

Liam chuckled, his voice all warm and gooey. “What, you wanna hit up a food truck at the night market?”

Natalie puffed out her lip, cute as a button. “Food trucks are the best! I’d treat you to every taco stand from one end of the strip to the other.”

“Yeah, and I’d be camped out in the bathroom from midnight to noon.”

Natalie stuck out her tongue. “How was I supposed to know your stomach’s so high-maintenance? I eat street food all the time and I’m totally fine.”

One of the guys busted out laughing. “Ms. Stone, you’re so down-to-earth. Liam, you’re one lucky guy.”

Yup, to everyone, Natalie was all about keeping it real. Unlike Freya, who was apparently just a shopaholic blowing cash on jewelry.

Freya dragged herself home well after midnight.

She booked a courier on her phone, took a quick shower, and crashed, dead to the world.

In the morning, Liam was standing with his back to her, buttoning up a dress shirt.

Freya squinted, confused. “You… slept here last night?”

Liam let out a soft laugh. “What’s that supposed to mean? When have I ever not come home?”

“But weren’t you—”

Liam moved quick, pinning her to the bed. “Or what-were you up all night waiting for me to come back… so we could get started on a kid?”

His last words came with a hot breath against her lips.

His kiss landed hard, deep, no quick peck.

Freya pushed back with both arms. “Get off me.”

Liam’s eyes were still smoldering as he propped himself up. “What’s wrong?”

Freya started, “I—”

Ring ring! Her phone blared.

She snatched it up fast. “Yeah, it’s me. You’re here? Alright, I’m coming down.”

She shoved him off and slid out of bed.

Liam’s mood soured, clearly ticked at the interruption. “Who’s calling you at the crack of dawn? And a guy?”

Freya’s face tightened as she yanked on a jacket and snapped, “It’s late. Don’t you have a job to get to?”
