Chapter 55
Liam’s face crumpled in pain. “Losing Sherri hits me hard too, Freya. I promise, I’ll make this right for you.”
“Make it right? Yeah, that fixes everything!” Freya fired back. “Like that’ll bring her back?”
She fixed him with an icy glare. “Mr. Grant, cut the pointless crap from now on. It just makes me sick.”
She whirled around and marched out of the pet shop.
Ryan stuck close behind her, just half a step away–like a human shield, keeping the world at bay.
He eased her into the car with a gentle hand on her elbow, then cupped his palm over the doorframe to keep her from banging her head.
And here’s the kicker: he popped open the passenger door for her.
The friend who’d gotten dragged into this mess? He was shell–shocked.
He wondered, ‘Isn’t she supposed to be Ryan’s girl?
‘So how come the father of her poor dead dog is none other than Liam, the golden heir of the Grant family?
…This whole thing is a goddamn mess!‘
“Darrick,” Ryan said, popping back up at his side like a ghost and clapping his shoulder. “One last favor: stash Sherri’s body in the pet hospital freezer for now. Keep the nosy types away, and heads up–somebody might try to ditch the evidence. I’ll hit up the cops tomorrow for an official autopsy.”
Darrick Joyce gave a firm nod. “No sweat. I’ll station a guy to watch the shop.”
“Thanks, man. Freya’s waiting–catch you later.”
Darrick wet his lips, then blurted out the question burning a hole in him. “Okay, but… what’s your deal with this Freya?”
Ryan started to reply. “We’re-”
“She’s my wife,” Liam jumped in. “Ryan’s my ride–or–die. Freya’s been stuck in Sairo with work, and I couldn’t swing being there, so I asked him to look out for her.”
Darrick’s eyes went saucer–wide. “Your wife? She’s married?”
Liam dipped his head. “Yep. Darrick, yeah? Huge thanks for today. Anytime you need a favor, just say the word–I’ll hook you up.”
Darrick eyed Liam. Liam meant every syllable–no games.
Then he flicked a look at Ryan. His expression was thunderous, hands clenched at his sides like he was barely holding back a
tidal wave.
Darrick scratched his nose, letting out a forced, awkward laugh. “Alright, appreciate it, Mr. Grant. But I’m solid–no worries. I’ve got Sherri covered. You two… take it easy.”
“Mr. Reed!” Freya called out, rolling down the window with a edge in her voice, clearly annoyed. “We rolling out anytime soon? Or if you’re tied up, I’ll just take a taxi.”

“On my way!” Ryan shot back.
He gave Darrick’s shoulder a quick pat and hustled over.
