Joseph’s face twisted in outrage. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

Liam just smirked. “Doesn’t matter–you just want a Grant heir out of the deal. Me marrying her or you? Same difference in the end.”
You-”
Madison lost it too. “So I’m chopped liver now? Telling your father to marry Natalie–what does that leave me?
Liam looked away, exasperation lacing his words. “Mom, Dad–I’m an adult. I’ve got my own life. Freya’s the woman! picked, and she’s the only one I’ll ever marry. Why are you dead set on breaking us up?”
“Sure, you love her that much–then explain how that lines up with getting Natalie pregnant.”
Liam went rigid, the question landing like a sucker punch.
Joseph let out a scornful huff. “There it is. Your so–called love for her isn’t as profound as you make it sound–no grand. sweeping epic.”
“I only hooked up with Natalie because…”
“Because what?” Joseph leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “She doesn’t resemble Freya one bit–soft and sweet, without that explosive temper your wife’s famous for. Zero overlap, top to bottom. So, what–you’re still chasing shadows of Freya even with Natalie?”
Liam shut his eyes tight.
Helplessness washed over him like a tidal wave.
He’d sought out Natalie purely from resentment–the imbalance from Freya’s fling with Thomas eating him alive.
His plan had been simple: wrap it up, cut her a check, untangle the mess in his head, and slide right back into a guilt–free life with Freya.
But nothing had gone according to script.
Natalie turning up pregnant? Total curveball, derailing everything.
His parents‘ scheme that almost took Freya down? Strike one. And now Sherri–poisoned. Strike two.
Freya was already one foot out the door; pulling her back felt impossible.
Ring ring ring-
The landline pierced the quiet.
Servants still nowhere in sight, Madison grabbed it. “Hello?”
Natalie’s voice drifted through. “Madison, so? Did you and Joseph go with my idea? That dog’s toast, right?”
Midnight hush blanketed the room.
She wasn’t yelling, but every word sliced through the receiver, ringing out for all to hear.

Madison fumbled for an out. “Uh, Natalie–it’s way past bedtime. Joseph and I turned in ages ago. Tomorrow, okay? Hanging up now…”
“Hold on, Madison–bad timing, I know, but this kid’s been flip–flopping like crazy, and I can’t crash till I hear the verdict. Spill: what’s the status on that mutt? If it’s still kicking, I’ve got backup poison. I’ll swing by with it soon.”
