The war waged along on the open grounds and I didn’t bother checking who was winning or losing. I only cared about Killian.

And thankfully, whoever noticed me, didn’t waste time sparing me a second glance.

Not that I minded.

I kept closer to the walls to avoid getting hit by a stray attack and slowly moved to the temple.

I had reached the temple entrance but to my dismay it was locked.

Probably because of the ongoing war, they had closed it and locked the ladies inside.

I looked from left to right and then ran towards the back end where the quarters were for us to bathe and rest before entering the temple.

The doors were all locked as well. Left with no other option, I banged hard on the doors.

My fists thumped loudly against the doors but given the chaos outside, I wasnt sure they would hear me.

“Sarah! Are you around!!”

I thumped with all the energy I could muster and screamed at the top of my lungs. Just when I was about to raise my hand to bang for the umpteenth time, the door creaked.

I saw a small slit open on the left side, barely enough for someone to take a peek outside.

“Valencia?”

I heard a familiar voice and my heart jumped in my throat.

She ran back to the bolts to open them but then I heard the sound of scuffle and raised voices around her.

“Sarah, what is happening?”

I asked but it appeared she wasn’t listening to me.

Confused I got down on my knees to look inside and saw that Sarah was arguing with none other than Nina.

Shit, I had forgotten all about this bitch amidst all the other troubles I had witnessed.

“You can’t open the doors. Do you want the war to come inside and hurt all of us?”

Nina shouted at her and I saw Sarah look back at ehr defiantly.

But Nina reached for Sarah’s hand that was about to twist the lock open and yanked it away.

“You can’t risk opening the door and spilling in blood here. We are safe inside.”

Nina gritted her teeth.

Sarah, who would usually cower under her gaze and nod meekly to whatever Nina said, however didn’t listen to her this time.

Instead, she jutted her chin up and looked at Nina dead in the eye.

“Valencia is also a temple keeper like us. Are we not supposed to protect each other in times of need as per our guidebook?”

Sarah argued and Nina blinked, surprised by Sarah’s comeback.

“Yeah, that was what is mentioned in one of the numerous scrolls you made us copy. You will be breaking a rule here by not allowing her entry inside.”

I was impressed by Sarah’s bravery. She had finally found the courage to talk back to Nina.

And I felt proud of her.

“That is different” Nina shook her head, clearly not sharing the same sentiment as me.

“A war is waging outside, to bring her in is to risk the lives of several of the temple keepers inside. One life doesn’t outweigh that of hundreds.”

Nina said in a tone of finality.

But Sarah wasn’t done.
