Chapter 76
Chapter 76
Valencia
I spent the entire day chatting with Sarah and getting familiar with the way things were carried out at the temple, I wasn’t even aware of how time filed away before it was night already.
It had been a refreshing experience to not worry about any of the royals or nobles, Killian included.
My brain had just decided to push those thoughts away and unravel the tangled knots later.
There were several floors and sections to the humongous cave, and the ones we could access were absolutely fascinating
One huge section was nothing but a giant wall running along the length of the cave with several holes in it to put it simply.
A few of the novices, wearing white like us, were going at the stone with a chisel and a hammer, sculpting it to the shape they liked.
In a few of such spaces, I saw a few women either sitting, meditating or reading.
“I have been dying to get one for myself as well. It is like carving a place for yourself in the temple, in the very walls that holds it together. It is not just symbolic but also allows us to brag that we got the opportunity to have a special niche carved just for us by our own hands…
Sophia said wistfully as she looked at the women minding their own business.
I looked around and saw that everybody had carved a niche for themselves in different shapes and sizes. One particularly stood out to me, an elaborate snowflake that was giant enough to take up almost all the space from floor to ceiling.
“Woah” I exclaimed as I wondered how long it must have taken someone to create that. It was perfectly in shape, and had no bends or integ
“Want to guess who this belonged to?”
I was going to say some Elder Priestess at first but then I noticed the way she said ‘belonged‘ as in past tense. That meant the person wasn’t in this leve and had already moved higher.
“Margaret Thesible”
I quipped and Sarah nodded, “That is right”
We inched closer to the wall and examined that artistic piece and the level of detail that went into crafting this niche.
At the center was enough space for a person to sit and the various stems of the snowflake branching out in all corners had little cavities that you could put candles in for a soft light.
It looked magical and dreamy.
WE grew tired after walking around all day and then she pulled me across one of the many stone tables directly chiseled out of the rocks of the cave and occupied two of the wooden chairs.
“Thank you for the tour” I said and Sarah gave me a bow.
“Oh, you are yet to see most of it. But we will take it slow.”
“The Crone is truly impressive,” I remarked, and Sarah nodded.
“She is. Also, why I want to spend all my time here instead of being around with the bitchy royals.”
I giggled at that. I doubted the deity would love one of the temple keepers using such curse words every now and then, but Sarah said it so casually that I didn’t even register it.

But it didn’t take long for our laughter to die down.
Because then out of nowhere, something smacked against our heads at once.
“Ow,” I winced and then we both looked behind to see Senior Nina standing behind us.
“I would ask the Crone to get you disbarred if you cant follow simple rules, Novice Sarah?
Sarah bit her tongue and muttered.
“I am sorry, Senior Nina. It is just that I grew up hearing a lot of swear words and…”
Sarah began but Senior Nina rolled the paper she was carrying in her hand and hit her on the head again.
“That was your past. You have been here for 5 years already, and all your batch mates have progressed to upper ranks. If you would focus or studying and did your duties correctly instead of always falling back on your old habits like some addict, you would be just a level below me.”
That comment made all the smiles and mischievousness wipe out from Sarah’s face. I also saw her eyes grow slightly moist, but she saw me watching her and blinked furiously before getting up.
“I am sorry, Senior Nina,” She apologized as the old woman said.
“You can go prepare my meditation room now and ensure it is just like I want.”
Sarah nodded meekly and walked away, but I could see her raise her hand to quickly wipe at her face.
Sarah disappeared behind the stone walls, and I remarked.
“There was no need to be so rude to her”
That made Senior Nina look at me sternly.
“You might be the Blessed One or the witch’s descendant, but in here, you are only a Novice, and I hope you remember to never ever raise your voice against someone ranked higher than you again.”
I wanted to snap back at her or just say something, but I figured anger wouldn’t do me any good. Besides, she was definitely senior than me, and I had not even met the Crone today to talk about my duties or how she plans to help me learn magic.
I had to focus on that instead of talking to this lady.
So, I asked, “When can I see the Crone?”
Senior Nina answered in the same dry tone.
