Carter was the kind of man who could be cold to others, but he couldn’t tolerate being ignored. Carrying those doubts and frustrations, he went straight to the office to work late.
At the auction house, Rhea said, “You scared me. I thought you were really going to spend that much on a necklace.”
George’s eyes twinkled as he looked at her. “Would you be upset if I had?”
“It wouldn’t be worth it,” she said.
George stood. “I’m leaving now. When are you going back to Draventh?”
Rhea raised an eyebrow. “Why are you asking?”
“I said I’d throw you a welcome party.”
“In a few days,” she replied.
With that, George left.
But just as Rhea was about to leave, someone else entered. “Ms. Ravelle.”
He was holding a box wrapped in red silk. “Mr. Snider asked me to deliver this to you.”
He set the box down and left.
Just then, Rhea’s phone buzzed with a WhatsApp message from George.
“That necklace wasn’t worth 500 million dollars, but this one is. Wear it for fun.”
It was a short and simple message.
When Rhea opened the box, Colin, who was standing nearby, recognized it instantly. “Isn’t this the fairy necklace that was sold at Selvaria Commemorative Auction House seven years ago for one of the five highest prices ever?”
It was said that every owner of the fairy necklace had gone on to enjoy the happiest, most fulfilling marriages.
In the car, George’s secretary couldn’t help asking, “Mr. Snider, you’ve had that necklace for so long, and you just gave it away?”

George looked down at his phone.
After a long silence, he closed his eyes. “I bought it in the first place to give to her.”
Two months after he had first won the necklace, Rhea married Carter.

No one knew how long George had been watching Rhea under the guise of being just a brother figure. He knew every little thing about her.
But this was a secret.
That evening, back at home, Lauren didn’t feel any joy over receiving such an expensive necklace because she noticed that Carter wasn’t happy. And it was all because of Rhea.
“Ms. Thayer, I just heard that the twins are having a parent–teacher meeting soon,” Scarlett said as she approached.
Lauren was already irritated and about to reply when a voice came from downstairs.
“Has Carter returned?” She quickly got out of bed and went downstairs.
In the living room, Alisha was explaining the parent–teacher meeting to Carter. “The school said that both parents need to attend.”
Carter loosened his tie. “I thought that only one parent had to go each time.”
Alisha hesitated. “The teacher mentioned that the kids‘ grades have slipped a bit recently, so they want to talk to both parents.”
“Carter.” Lauren walked over and took his blazer. Her every move radiated thoughtfulness. “You
should have dinner first.”
Carter asked, “Where are the kids?”
“They already had dinner. They’re in their rooms now,” Alisha replied.
At the dining table, Carter grew more restless.
