Chapter 237
At 4:30 pm, Lauren saw Carter return and head into the walk–in closet to pick out a suit. She asked, ” Carter, are you heading out?”
“I’m going to a cocktail party,” he replied.
Cocktail party?
Lauren probed carefully. “Mr. Cain’s going too, right?”
“He invited me.”
She knew then that it had to be a high–profile event. She figured that most of Draventh’s business owners would probably be there.
After thinking it over, Lauren said, “You’re not exactly mobile right now. Want me to come along?”
Carter turned around and instinctively wanted to refuse. After all, Marcus hadn’t mentioned needing
a companion.
Lauren continued, “I’m not going as your date. Just as someone accompanying you. I can help out if anything comes up, and it’ll save bothering other people.”
Carter hated being embarrassed in front of others. He could only get around in a wheelchair now, which did make things inconvenient if he needed anything.
“Okay.”
Lauren smiled. “I’ll go change then.”
Carter paused, then added, “Don’t dress too fancy.”
Lauren’s smile dimmed slightly. “Got it.”
At 5:40 pm, Carter met Marcus outside the cocktail party venue right on time.
Marcus glanced down at Carter in the wheelchair. “I didn’t ask you to bring a date.”
Carter replied, “She’s not my date. I just need a little help getting around.”
Lauren stepped out of the car. “Mr. Cain.”
Marcus gave a neutral nod. There wasn’t much personal connection between them, only a favor he had already repaid.

As they moved forward, Marcus‘ gaze sharpened. “She’s dressed like that, and you’re saying that she’s not your date? That key partner we’ve been courting is at this party. Nathan and George are
here too.”
They were all vying for the same project.
That potential partner had regarded Carter differently due to his status as the Ravelle family’s son–in -law. But now, Lauren was attending the party with him.
Carter said, “You didn’t mention that earlier.”
Marcus knew that it was his own oversight. “Just send her back.‘

Lauren wore flats that day, and with each step, sharp pain shot through her ankle.
However, this was an opportunity to assert one’s presence. So, she couldn’t pass it up. She had to go, even if it meant enduring the pain.
Just as she approached Carter with a look of delight, a car drove up and came to a stop a little over
three feet away from them.
The usher approached it. “Mr. Nathan, Ms. Ravelle.”
Rhea wore an evening dress that night, her makeup flawless and refined. From head to toe, she looked pristine and radiant, with jewelry that gleamed subtly around her neck, enhancing her natural elegance.
Her appearance made Lauren seem dull in comparison. Still, she gritted her teeth and edged closer to Carter, determined to hold her ground in front of Rhea.
However, Carter said, “Lauren, you should head back. The staff inside can assist me.”
