Chapter 262
“Since that’s the case, I won’t push it. I’ll get going,” Marcus said before he stood and left.
“Carter, he…” Lauren’s face tightened with worry.
“I’ll see him out,” Carter said.
At the villa gates, Carter called out, “Mr. Cain.”
Marcus stopped and turned back.
“I’m sorry, but I’ll try to pull in other partnerships,” Carter said. He hadn’t forgotten that Marcus was the one who had first helped him set foot in Draventh.
“How would you do that? Right now in Draventh, everyone knows that you’ve betrayed the Ravelle heiress. They’re all afraid of angering Liam, so they’re all keeping their distance from you! Dexter’s business is overseas, so he’s not afraid of Liam. This is your only chance!”
Marcus was furious. He continued, “And you’re throwing it away because of something a woman whispered in your ear? Also, working with Dexter isn’t our choice to make. It’s his. He may not want us at all!”
With that, he turned, got into his car, and drove off.
Carter sat in his wheelchair, feeling the late autumn wind.
Suddenly, it felt like he was back at the very beginning, when he was struggling to climb his way up again. He had to endure humiliation and rely on others‘ moods to land a deal.
Back then, though, Rhea had been by his side. She had encouraged him, supported him, and offered sharp advice.
“Carter, Marcus was too harsh. People like him aren’t worth keeping around.”
Carter frowned.
Rhea was nothing like Lauren, who only ever made things harder for him.
Frustration welled up in his chest. “So what’s your plan then? When will we ever be free from the Ravelles‘ shadow?”
He suddenly realized that Lauren had always judged people as bad or dangerous. None of her opinions was ever helpful.
Lauren froze. “I only said it because I didn’t want you upset. Calm down, Carter.‘
Carter said nothing more and turned his wheelchair back around.

As Lauren watched his back, she nearly ground her teeth to pieces. However, she swallowed her anger and hurried after him. “It’s fine. We still have Elena. Her father knows Dexter, but they’re not in the same field. And Dexter isn’t in Dalea often. Things will be fine once he’s gone.”
“I’m going to the office,” Carter said flatly.
“Okay, come home early. I’ll make dinner.”
Carter simply left without replying.
That evening, Arielle and Adrian came home from school. As soon as they walked through the doors,
they changed their shoes and went to wash their hands.
Lauren stayed in the living room, her eyes fixed on them. The more she looked at them, the more she grew to loathe the two kids.
Devan was out shopping for groceries, and the maids were busy elsewhere.
Lauren motioned for Scarlett to switch off the cameras. When that was done, she couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Are you two mute?”
