That night, Carter stayed up half the night with Arielle and Adrian, comforting them until they fell asleep happily.

When he finally returned to his room, his back was stiff from the effort.

Playing with the kids for hours was exhausting enough, let alone spending a whole day with them— helping with homework, monitoring every meal, and making sure they didn’t get sick.

He wondered how grueling Rhea’s six years must have been.

Carter had barely settled when Lauren appeared, carrying a basin of water.

“Carter, let me help you wash your feet.”

He said sharply, “Keep these tricks to seduce old men to yourself. I just want to rest.”

Lauren’s chest tightened. “Don’t believe those ridiculous claims. Can’t you see how I feel about you? When have I even washed anyone’s feet?”

She stepped closer. “Come on. Don’t be mad. Rest up tonight. You’ll be heading to Colburn tomorrow. You need enough sleep.”

Tomorrow was the day he and Rhea were supposed to finalize the divorce. The past month had been

such a whirlwind.

Carter frowned. “You should go.”

Carter headed downstairs after washing up.

“Morning, Carter. I made you seafood pasta. I just learned how to make it. Have some before you go.” Lauren smiled gently. It was as if nothing had happened yesterday.

Without saying a single word, Carter left the house and got in the car to head to Colburn. He had Glen deliberately drive slowly.

At that moment, he suddenly didn’t want a divorce. Once it happened, he and Rhea would truly have nothing to do with each other anymore.
