Chapter 301
Lauren stubbornly refused to listen.
Carter frowned. “Lauren, to be honest, I don’t have time to take care of you right now. Besides, we don’t really have any relationship. What’s the point of you having this child?”
Lauren hadn’t expected him to say that. She clenched her hands tightly under the blanket.
After a long pause, she said through her tears, “Don’t worry. I won’t interfere with your life. I won’t tell anyone that we have a child. I know you want to live a good life with Rhea, and I’ll wish you well.”
Lauren’s compromise stirred a twinge of guilt in Carter.
She loved him, albeit in a misguided way. He realized that he didn’t need to treat her with such coldness and harshness.
“Lauren, that would be too much for you. What if something happens to you? How would I explain it to the kids?”
“It’s not too much. Just thinking that I can have a child with you makes me feel like the happiest woman in the world. I don’t care about status.” Lauren’s gaze was soft and pitiful.
Carter relented. “You don’t have to do this.”
“I do.” Lauren bit her lip. “I’ve fought cancer before. I can endure this pain.”
Carter knew just how painful cancer could be. If her cancer had truly recurred, it would be
unbearable.
He completely softened. “Lauren, take care of your body. I’ll cover all the expenses.”
Lauren pressed her lips into a faint smile. “Carter, just focus on your career. I’ll take care of our child. You just need to come see us when you have time. I don’t care about anything else. Status
doesn’t matter to me.”
Carter stared at her deeply, feeling both guilt and unease.
He worried that the Ravelles might discover this through other channels, but he also knew that he could hide it carefully.
“Lauren, once I succeed, I’ll make sure you and the child have a comfortable life.”
In these few exchanges, he had already tacitly accepted that Lauren would be his mistress.
Lauren held his hand. “You’ve lost weight these few days. Haven’t you been resting well?”
Carter hadn’t received such concern in days. He had indeed been exhausted lately, but no one around

had noticed.
“I’m fine. Everything’s fine,” he said.
Lauren had also heard the rumors outside. Liam seemed to already accept Carter as his son–in–law, which temporarily gave Carter unprecedented influence.
Lauren wouldn’t be foolish enough to stir up trouble at this point. Instead, she would cooperate fully with Carter. She would wait until he had secured a position and status in Draventh before showing up
with her three children.
“Get some rest. I need to make a phone call,” Carter said.
