Chapter 318
“It’s not like that. I…” Lauren’s smile turned awkward. “Things between Carter and Rhea went bad long ago, and Carter and I have children together. If not for certain things that happened, we would never have been separated. They later talked about divorce, but even then, she forced Carter to make me get rid of this baby.”
She didn’t stop there. “The moment my pregnancy was terminated, they got divorced. It’s clear that she was targeting my baby, isn’t it? I just don’t think proper heiresses like you would do something so cruel. Do you think I’m just too mentally weak, Elena?”
Elena frowned. She was fuming now. The fact that Lauren could tell her something like that meant that Lauren thought she was a fool–and one that couldn’t tell right from wrong. Why else would Lauren keep wanting her to take her side?
Elena composed herself. “No, I don’t think so.”

Lauren started to smile. “I knew you were kind, Elena. You’re not like certain other heiresses, who aren’t what they-”
Elena cut her off. “You’re just too shameless.”
Lauren abruptly stopped talking, and Sharon’s jaw dropped.
Elena leaned back in her seat and rested an arm on the armrest. She cocked her head and said, Regardless of whether their relationship went bad, they’re still a married couple. They’re not
divorced yet.
“You made ruining someone’s marriage sound like you were simply following your heart and being devoted to your partner. You hurt another woman, yet you don’t find it shameful at all. You even have the nerve to call her cruel.
“You keep talking about how your two children don’t like you and don’t want to have anything to do with
you. Did you stop to think that maybe it’s not worth having an immoral mother like you?”
Lauren was stunned.
Elena stood up. “I don’t like your character. From now on, let’s just act like we’re strangers.”
With that, she walked toward the door. She stopped there and turned back. “By the way, I think you’re wrong about something. Heiresses like me would never take pity on your unborn, illegitimate child. We would even get back at you and make sure you paid the price. You should thank Ms. Ravelle for going easy on you, you know.”
If Lauren had crossed the proper matriarch of a family, especially one that was at the pinnacle of power, she would have mysteriously disappeared the moment the scandal broke. She would never

Sharon snapped to her senses and hurried after Elena. “Ms. Austin!”

Down the hallway, Elena was already waiting for an elevator. She didn’t even spare Sharon a glance as she said, “Tell Lauren that she should at least lay some groundwork before trying to use someone next time. She shouldn’t let her greedy, scheming side show so blatantly. Unless Carter has gone mad, there’s no way that he would ditch Ms. Ravelle for her.”
The elevator doors slid shut as the last word fell from her lips. Sharon stood there, her face red with shame and anger.
“What else did she say?” Lauren’s face was ashen.
Sharon pursed her lips, unable to bring herself to repeat Elena’s words.
“Tell me!” Lauren was starting to lose control of her emotions.
Sharon said in a small voice, “She said that… you shouldn’t make it so obvious that you want to use someone. She also said that Carter must be blind…”
