As for Carter, he went to the Ravelle residence to look for Liam after taking care of his end of things. However, a maid there told him that no one was at home and asked him to drop by another day.

He got into his car, which then left the Ravelle residence.

“Mr. Jamison, you haven’t eaten all day. You should get a bite of something,” Glen said.

“Have you booked a table somewhere?” Carter asked.

“No, but there’s a restaurant up ahead.”

Ten minutes later, Carter sat in a private room, having mixed feelings. The room door wasn’t shut properly, so he heard a voice drift inside, as clear as day.

“Honestly, Carter Jamison is a fool for messing around like that instead of cozying up to the Ravelle family, who are the best in–laws he could hope for. Ms. Ravelle deigned to marry him and helped him raise his children for many years, yet he had an affair with his children’s irresponsible mother. He’s despicable!”

“Any other man would keep their father–in–law and wife happy, if only just to climb the ladder. The heavens gave him the opportunity of a lifetime, and he messed it up. He’s worthless!”

“I saw a photo of that woman—Lauren Thayer is her name. She looks like a plain Jane and can’t compare to Ms. Ravelle! I have no idea what is wrong with Carter Jamison. Now that he’s done something like this, who would dare risk offending Liam to work with him?”

“His life is over.”

Carter’s eyes

turned red with rage. He gritted his teeth hard and gripped his glass so tightly that he could almost break it. In that instant, he wanted to charge out there and see who those people were!

Once he and Rhea remarried and he had appeased Liam, he would teach these vermin–who only had the nerve to badmouth him in secret–a lesson!

However, Carter forced himself to endure this. Staying out of trouble and keeping his head down for the time being was what he needed to do.

Glen entered the private room and said, “Mr. Jamison, your cigarettes.”

The chatter outside had yet to stop. Glen added, “Don’t take those words to heart, sir.”

“Of course I won’t.” Carter forced a smile while lighting a cigarette. “They’re just saying those things because they’re jealous. Once Rhea and I reconcile, they’ll bow and scrape as they grovel at my feet again.”

Once Lauren issued a public apology, he could pin all of this on her. Then, this matter would be over. He would still be the newest member of Draventh’s upper crust and the Ravelle family’s son–in–law!

Still, he felt uncomfortable. If only he were Liam… He wouldn’t need to rely on anyone else’s

influence.
