Kate remembered back when Rhea had told her about her feelings for Carter. At the time, she had empathized with Rhea deeply.
When she learned that Rhea had actually married Carter, her hidden feelings grew even stronger because she realized that unrequited love could turn into something real.
So she threw herself into self–improvement—cultivating her mind and expanding her knowledge and perspective–all to be worthy of George.
Their family backgrounds were similar, and they were close in age. She had been waiting and hoping
to be with him.
And just like that, 12 years had passed.
“Ms. Pearson, we’re here,” the driver reminded her.
Kate snapped out of her reverie and stepped out of the car, entering the Cain residence.
“Kate?” Priscilla looked surprised. “Why didn’t you tell me before coming? Come, have some tea.”
Kate glanced at Marcus. “Marcus.”
He had eaten dinner at home that evening. “Have you had dinner?”
“Yeah,” Kate replied, taking a seat. “At Mrs. Snider’s place.”
“Mrs. Snider?” Marcus lowered his gaze.
“Yeah, though it wasn’t entirely pleasant.”
“What happened?” Marcus looked at her.
Kate sipped her tea. “George is dating Rhea now, but Mrs. Snider didn’t seem very happy about it. She said a few things to him at the dinner table.”
Her words gave Marcus an idea. He said, “Don’t get involved in their affairs. You’ve lost weight recently. I’ll have the kitchen prepare some food for you.”
Kate smiled. “Thanks, Marcus.”
Marcus stepped aside and made a call on his phone. “Help me release a news article.”

The next day, Rhea had arranged with George to meet him at noon. He said that he wanted to take her somewhere.
Early in the morning, Rhea was changing clothes in the dressing room.
Ruby entered, her expression cold. “Rhea.”
“Yes, Mom?”
“Maybe you shouldn’t go out today,” Ruby said.
Rhea turned around. “Why? Do you want me to stay with you?”
As Ruby glanced at Rhea’s beautiful face, her anger simmered.
Cynthia usually got along with Ruby. Who would have thought that she secretly looked down on Rhea for having been married?
Ruby had read the news article. It was impossible to hide it from Rhea. She felt deeply for her precious daughter, but deception would never work.
“You should read this,” Ruby said, handing over her phone.
Rhea quickly skimmed the article. Every word hinted that Cynthia disliked her and had a problem with her being previously married.
Rhea smiled lightly. “Mom, I can’t expect everyone to like me. I understand her feelings, but that’s
not my concern.
Seeing her so composed, Ruby asked doubtfully, “You’re not angry?”
“I’m a little bothered, but I’m not angry. I deserve to face some judgment for the mistakes I’ve made in the past. That’s fair, Mom.”
