Noticing Cynthia’s expression, Carter wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and sneered. “We’re all people of status here. There’s no need to spell out that you’re using him. We can handle this privately.

“Rhea, I don’t care what’s going on between you and George, and I’m not going to question you. But some lines can’t be crossed. Do you really want everyone thinking that George is nothing more than my stand–in?”

The moment those words left his mouth, Steven’s and Cynthia’s expressions turned completely grim.

Rhea’s eyes locked on Carter. “Dad, Mom, you all should head back inside first.”

The chill in Liam’s gaze was impossible to hide, but arguing with Carter wasn’t his way. So he steadied Charlie, who was about to explode. “Dad, Arthur, let’s go inside.”

This wasn’t something they needed to step into. Arthur gave Carter a single look, then walked into the house.

George also said, “Dad, Mom, you two should go home.”

Cynthia ground her teeth. “You’re coming with us.”

Left with no choice, Cynthia swallowed every ounce of fury and followed Steven.

Now, only five people remained outside the Ravelle residence–three adults and two children.

Rhea no longer cared that the kids were watching. Her hand cracked across Carter’s face, snapping his head to the side. She used up almost all her strength. “If I had known back then that loving you even once would bring me this much trouble, I would have chosen never to meet you at all. I don’t know what you’re clinging to me for, but I guess it’s mostly for profit.

“Did you come here shamelessly hoping that my family will build your path? Why not just say so? At least then I could admire your lack of shame. Instead, you play this ugly charade, pretending that we’re some kind of fated match.”

Carter’s expression twisted.

Rhea stepped closer, her eyes fixed on him like he was nothing but trash. “The reason I kept my true identity from you back then was that I dreaded a scene like this–pestering me, disgusted by me, and showing how greedy you are. Carter, you really are just as I expected.” 1

His pride was crushed to dust.

He had already expected this outcome before coming. No matter how bitter it felt, he forced himself not to talk back.

Rhea smiled. “You mentioned my best friend. Who was it? Kate?”

Carter glanced at George. “Yeah. She told me.”

“Told you what?” Rhea stepped in closer before she continued, “That I still have feelings for you? That I’m just using George? That I don’t even like him?”

With each question, the disappointment inside her grew deeper.

Carter looked helpless. “I knew you wouldn’t admit it because pride matters to you. That’s why I came to you. I can apologize and make amends. We can rebuild this family.”
