Chapter 364
Kate’s gaze flicked briefly to the phone in Elena’s hand.
Noticing that, Elena tapped the screen and said into the receiver, “I’ll hang up now. We can talk later.”
However, she didn’t actually press the button to end the call. She just rested the phone on her lap. “Go on.”
Only then did Kate lower some of her guard. “It’s really not a big deal. Rhea and I had a bit of a falling–out over some misunderstandings. I get that George would be protective since he’s her boyfriend, but I didn’t expect them to take things this far without thinking about our years of friendship.
“That’s why I didn’t go to them for help. I thought that I’d trouble you instead. I can give you whatever you want, as long as it means that I can get in touch with your father’s legal team.”
Kate didn’t fully explain what had happened. She kept things deliberately vague, as if hoping to gloss over them.
Elena yawned. “I still don’t quite understand.”
Kate was stunned. “You don’t?”
“I mean, I still don’t know exactly what happened.”
Elena seemed intent on making Kate tell the whole story before agreeing to help.
Kate took a sip of water, hesitating as if caught in an inner struggle. Then, she looked up. “It’s not a big deal. Rhea had some conflict with her ex, and since we’ve been close since we were young, I couldn’t bear to see her suffer.
“So I took it upon myself to reach out to him, hoping that they could sit down and talk things calmly. I never expected my good intentions to backfire and create misunderstandings with Rhea and George.”
Elena narrowed her eyes. “If that’s the case, it shouldn’t be enough to make them want revenge. They’d have to be really petty for that. You could just explain it to them. After all, you’ve known each other since you were kids. It shouldn’t have come to this.”
Lowering her head, she added, “Ms. Pearson, we’re not exactly close. We just happen to have each other’s numbers. You know how some things can stir up trouble fast.”
She was implying that Kate wasn’t telling the whole truth.
Kate pressed her lips together. “They did misunderstand me. They thought that I contacted her ex on purpose, which made George jealous.”
Elena crossed her arms without saying a single word. Her calm gaze unsettled Kate’s composure.
Kate felt a twinge of doubt. She thought that Elena could have refused outright if she didn’t want to help. Yet here she was, insisting on knowing the full story.
Kate reckoned that Elena probably wouldn’t agree to connect her with her father’s top legal team if she didn’t clarify herself that day.
“Ms. Pearson, lies only breed more lies. If you don’t trust me, then given what little interaction we’ve had, there’s no need for us to continue this,” Elena said, standing as if to leave.
“Ms. Austin.” Kate stopped her, looking like she had something to say but couldn’t get the words out.
Elena sat back down. “Yes?”
Kate followed suit. “Are you concerned about having any conflict with the Snider family? I know that my request is a bit too much to ask, but I—”
