Marcus let out a long breath before saying, “You scared the shit out of me.”

Once he collected himself, he flipped on the lights. The glow spread across the room, casting light on Kate’s figure by the
window.
Marcus frowned. “You’re smoking? Since when do you smoke?”
For years, Kate had been the picture–perfect heiress of Draventh with not a trace of bad habits. If people ever nitpicked, the only flaw they could point to was that she was too agreeable.
Kate, with her back to him, gazed out at the silent, snowy night. “Marcus, turn off the light. It’s too bright.”
With a helpless sigh, he switched it off again, leaving only the small heater lamp by the couch, casting a dim glow.
“What’s going on with you?” he asked.
Kate cradled one arm with the other, a cigarette balanced between her fingers.
Ever since learning that George had feelings for Rhea, she had secretly taken up smoking. Whenever her frustration became unbearable, lighting one felt like the only way to calm the chaos in her chest.
“I don’t know what to do about my parents‘ case anymore. The lawyer told me that the plaintiff has no intention of dropping the charges. If my parents are convicted, our family is finished.”
Priscilla had been running herself ragged the past few days for this case, too, but who would dare go against the Snider family?
With the Snider and Ravelle families bound so tightly together now, only a fool would pick that fight.
Marcus thought for a moment. He then suggested, “Why” you go to George? He can’t be that heartless.”
Kate slowly turned around. The eyes that had always been gentle and cool over the years were now bloodshot, with a trace of ruthlessness in them.
“Go to him?” She gave a humorless laugh. “Do ow
what that would cost me?”
Marcus frowned. “There’s always a trade–off. Either you go to him or Rhea.”
Who would have thought George would dig up old history and target Connor and Evie?
Kate drew in a long breath of smoke and exhaled slowly. “If I go to him, he’ll demand that I admit I did everything on purpose. How could I ever admit that? Gossip from outsiders is one thing, but if I admit it, George will never let me off the hook. He’ll use it to crush my parents completely.”
Marcus couldn’t wrap his head around it. “If you already know what kind of man he is, why do you still like him?”
They were practically enemies now. How could there still be any chance of them being together?
Kate closed her eyes. “Heartbreak doesn’t feel good. But I know exactly how to break Rhea’s heart.” “What do you mean by that? Kate, don’t do anything reckless. If you provoke the Snider and Ravelle families now, turning back! Just let go. At least then your parents might walk free.” Marcus hurriedly stopped her.

Even he didn’t dare go up against the Snider and Ravelle families. How could Kate have such a reckless idea? Kate shot him a glance. “So this is how you’ve been scraping by under the Snider and Ravelle families‘ noses all these years?” Her words were harsh. But Marcus knew that she was upset, so he just let it slide. “Just sit down. We’ll figure something out.” “I don’t have much time left. The trial is after the New Year. If my parents are convicted of taking bribes, everything they’ve
