Chapter 379
“It’s okay. She has a maid with her.” Connor felt that it would be impolite to leave the guests here.
Valerie’s father, Wilson Levine, said, “Don’t worry. You go ahead. We’ll leave in a bit.”
“But…”
“Go on, Dad. Mom has never been hospitalized. She won’t feel good alone.” Kate gently pushed Connor out of the lounge.
When she returned, she lowered her gaze and gave a small bow.
Everyone present was puzzled by this gesture.
Evelyn crossed her arms and muttered sourly, “What are you doing?”
Her mother quickly pinched her wrist to signal her to be quiet.
Kate looked up. “Everyone, I’m very sorry. My mom… still doesn’t know about her condition. So please, I ask you not to mention it in front of her.”
Ruby’s smile was faint. “Understood. Don’t worry.”
It was a mere formality to avoid criticism. Most of the people present thought the same way.
After all, Connor and Evie had been aloof since they were young. They weren’t fond of loud gatherings or pretentiousness, keeping friendships only at a surface level, so they hardly had any close family friends.
Being overly refined in a materialistic world was almost a kind of sin.
“We’ll get going, then. We hope your mother recovers soon,” Ruby said, helping Lara to her feet.
The Ravelles left first.
Liam looked at Kate. “Tell your father that we’ll come visit another day.”
Kate lowered her eyes, her expression unreadable. “Thank you, Mr. Ravelle.”
After they left, she returned to the ward to find Evie crying. Her heart sank instantly.
“Mom?”
Evie looked up. “Where are the guests?”
“They just left.”
“They came all this way to see me and left so soon? Didn’t you treat them to a meal?” Evie, never one to be petty, was naturally hospitable.
“Mom, why are you crying?” Kate asked.
Evie’s eyes were red, and her lips were trembling. “It’s nothing.”
Kate had already guessed it. She figured that Connor couldn’t withstand Evie’s questioning and had just confessed everything.
Evie lay back down. “I’m tired. I want to rest. If there’s nothing else, you all should go home too.”
Kate’s anxiety wouldn’t allow her to leave. She continued to contact Karla and ask about the treatment plan.
Ever since learning of her lung cancer, Evie had visibly wasted away day by day.

Chapter 379
This was exactly what Kate had feared. If Evie found out the truth, it could mentally affect her.
The Pearsons spent most of their days in the hospital.
“Kate, go wash up and change. I’ll stay here with Aunt Evie,” Marcus said.
The Cain family also came to visit.
Kate had never looked so disheveled. Her hair was messy, and she no longer looked put together.
Priscilla said, “Marcus, take Kate home.”
